Number 1: The weapon is not a magic wand; you must know how to use it correctly. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Number 2: Know when to use it.
Number 3: Know when not to use it.

I continue to stress the training factor in the armed security
field. Also, way too many armed security firms are placing their personnel with additional risks when they are dressed
out in substandard uniforms. Uniforms that are not taylored to
the officer or have the correct fit will hamper the officers
performance if and when the use of deadly force with a firearm
is required. Numerous National studies have been conducted for
the military and law enforcement alike and the end result is
an officer with an impairment. Plus, a well taylored and well
groomed uniform with a firearm dictates who is professional &
who comes across as unprofessional, thus, indicating that just
maybe the armed security officer is a little too happy with
the trigger. I've observed this demeanor in court with armed
personnel and it was most unprofessional. Inexperienced armed
security officers shouldn't be allowed to wear just any made
up uniform or use old equipment. { old as in worn out and or
damaged } A very well pressed and organized uniform can say
1000 things about the officer in a positive way. ! All of this comes with the proper training. This is one small reason I
sincerely believe that armed personnel should come from back-
grounds in law enforcement, corrections, military, or a min. of 5 years armed security experience.

Thanks, Ben B.

Top 3 traits necessary to excell are:
1. Integrity
2. Vigilance
3. Helpfulness

Tips do develop your armed security officer expertise:
1. Take a line from Shakespear and put it into practice, "Where ere thou art, Act well thy part." This means look professional, dress professional, act professional.
2. Take all the training that you can find or afford.
3. Practice everything that you can be expected to do, such as (in no particular order):
a. Watch videos of crimes in progress, write reports of what you observe, and have someone evaluate your observation and reporting skills.
b. Your life may depend upon your ability to successully defend yourself, in an armed position this may require the ability to quickly and accurately draw a weapon and use it effectively -- practice all of this, with every tool at your disposal.
c. There are courses on quickly making decisions on whether or not to use deadly force that provide practice and evaluation opportunities, take them and master the necessary skills, then include those courses on your resume.
d. Develop your people skills, this will help you reduce the times that it will be necessary to use force.

Top 3

Responsibility

Honesty

Integrity

To add a fourth... Reliability

Combined with a BASE of knowledge

Training

Experience

Mindset

Equipment

Proper training is the START without it the experience you get may be tainted, or in some cases dangerous. Once you have a base of training nothing beats good old fashioned practical experience putting that training to work effectively, efficiently, and most importantly SAFELY!

"Situational Awareness" is a major factor in ALL aspects of the protection profession weather the uniform is digital camouflage , PD blue, or a professional security officers uniform. The basic skill sets apply.

All the training, experience and proper mindset will be impaired if you do not have good quality equipment from uniform to duty gear, to laptop. If your equipment fails in the worst extreme your live or the lives and property you protect could be compromised by cheep, or worn out equipment.

Respectfully,
