What are the top 3 traits or skills every assignment editor must have to excel?

Excellent phone skills. You must develop great relationships will police depts., gov't offices and PIO's from many agencies. This takes quite a bit of tolerance and patience, but a blown relationship with any of these people will make your job very difficult.

Decision making ability. You may not have a lot of time to decide to dispatch a reporter to breaking news. You will have to realize that sometimes you'll dispatch a crew to the far regions of your state and the situation will turn out to be nothing. You just have to move on.

Tolerance and understanding. The photogs and reporters out at scenes are under a lot of stress. They may take it out on you. You need to be there to support them with interview ideas, direction and basic moral support. It is important not to take things personally, everyone is working towards the same goal.
