What do you enjoy most about being an assignment editor? What do you dislike the most? Is it challenging? Are there many opportunities to learn and advance?

I love trying to come up with interesting angles for our stories, finding the interviews that the other stations might not think of. I love making contacts.

It can be challening to decide whether to pull a reporter from a "sure-thing" package to get to breaking news. "Breaking news" can turn out to be a dud, and the responsibility for a lost package is on the AEs shoulders.

Big stories are requested by the major networks, and the AE has to feed them video. Not all AEs enjoy having to take part in the technical aspect of things, it can be frustrating.

What keeps me at the job is the energy in the newsroom, and the fact that when my phone rings - it could be anyone from the governor to a little old lady who wants us to cover her church social.

Make you sure you develop a thick skin for this job!
