I think the best traits an assistant PM can have are:
"Gate keeper" skills - able to screen inquiries, effectively handle the ones they are capable of handling, and give manager the opportunity to concentrate on other items;

Willingness to learn - Training is key, critical and vital in the PM industry. Look for courses and keep up the date on the changes in the industry.

Ability to work smart - Keep in mind that PM is a job that requires some thinking about solutions when you are away from work.
