How do you break into brand management? I recently graduated with an MBA in marketing and am running into walls because I don't have the "traditional" CPG experience. Any advice would be appreciated.

When you find out post here. I graduated in '04 with MBA. I've been working retail ever since, because that was the only CPG related job I could get. I have gotten to Brand Specialist and now trying to gain a manager or merchandising title. I've seen these titles to be acceptable experience for Brand/Product Management positions. Remember it all depends on the industry - CPG is expansive.

Same here. I'm graduating this year with an MBA in Marketing and Management, and am finding it hard to land interviews. The best thing I've done so far is network aggressively, because you may have friends or family who know other people in brand management that you can, at the very least, talk to.

Go to MBA career fairs. I didn't have CPG experience, but I do well in interviews. A piece of paper only takes you so far. You have to get in front of people. You should be able to translate any work experience you have into brand management... Some CPG companies are more open to diverse work experience. Talk around with alums and see what they tell you. Making the transition is tough but very doable.
