Have a thorough understanding of inventory management terms (turn, margin, etc.) and how they relate to the success of the category which you may be buying for. Study on Retail Buying math. Experience with data warehouse applications may help but are not absolutely necessary. Communicate confidently, show an ability to react quickly, and make decisions without hesitation (and sometimes without complete data). Buying is a combination of science and art. Good luck to you!
