Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

Salaries can vary pretty widely. From 20k a year to 60k a year. It all depends on your employer, your education, your years of experience, your proven ability to learn, your grasp of customization techniques, etc.

There are a couple places to find out salary information...

www.salary.com

www.augi.com/surveys
(check out the lastest issue of AUGIWorld Magazine, which shows the first part of the 2006 salary survey results; they aren't broken down by metro area, but, it's good for generalization and comparison augi.com/surveys/default.asp?page=1440 )

management.cadalyst.com/cadman/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=384113

Skills needed would vary by company. Some it is just high output and consistency, others it is overall technical competency, some it is being bleeding edge in technology.

I encourage continuing education. Read industry publications and blogs. Take free classes on augi atp or other sites. Attend Autodesk University once a year.

If anyone wants a list of weblogs covering various autodesk products or some resource sites, feel free to ask.
