88 iroc-z atlernator in engaging

i have a 88 iroc 350 tpi that the alternator is not engaging alternator is brand new and also running a brand new optima red top with it tested good the alternator post's is hooked up to the battery on the postive side which it should but still can not figure out why it wont charge the battery any ideas

t could be the voltage regulator in the altinator or you have a dead cell in your battery
