How did you get your start doing avionics technician work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position? Do you need a particular educational background? |

Hi, I know you need a least an avionics certified technician or Avionics Associates degree curriculum, you can complete that within 1.5-2 years programs. In Arizona and several other states you can find this careers. you have to have a High school diploma. |

In addition to specific Avionics training or military training, I would recommend obtaining the NCCAT Aircraft Electronic Certification and an FCC license. These licenses carry some weight with employers. Study up on basic systems...RADAR, Communucation, Navigation, Instrumentation. Learn about basic aircraft theory. All of these things should help you in your career. |

As an avionics technician you MUST have your Airframe and Powerplant license, as well as your GROL with radar endorsments. Without these an employeer will immediatly through your resume out the window, and move onto the next one. |

I have been an avionics technician for over 30 years and currently manage a US Navy contact AIMD facility supporting avionics for over 200 aircraft of many types. I have hired numerous Avionics Technicians and could care less whether they have an A and P.....why would I? They are performing component level maintenance on avionics syestems, not rebuilding J-85's-LOL!! Now if you are talking about line avionics-A and P might be an advantage. If you want a job as a bench avionics tech, forget the A and P. Obtain military or 2 year tech degree in avionics and NCATT license as well as FCC radio telephone license as I stated before. |
