jess_ica in Monroe, North Carolina said: Yes, depending on how busy your particular branch is, being a teller can be very stressful (especially on Fridays). Your handling peoples' money... they don't tend to be very forgiving when you make mistakes with their finances. On the other hand, if they know that you're new, they do tend to be very patient to make sure that you don't make careless mistakes. Just go as slow as you need to when processing their transactions at first, and you'll naturally get faster and still be accurate.

And when you're first starting out, make sure you follow the whole "Do as I say do, not as I do" philosophy. Make sure you adhere to the policies that your company sets forth, and don't just do things the way the other tellers might be doing things, because if something comes back as an error on you, it's going to go in your variance, not theirs, and you'll be held accountable. And the whole "Well, she does it this way..." excuse is not going to get you very far. So just stick to the correct way you learned in training of doing things. In short, cover your ss.

Aside from all that, being a teller is great. You meet all kinds of people, and you can't beat the hours.

Really? I'm a teller and and the hours stink... sure I have my nights but with the 50+ hour weeks I'm so tired by the time I get off that I just eat and go to bed.... of course we are extremely short staffed right now.

I just started as a teller in a small branch. There is no formal training course on the systems and procedures so I must learn from others, and by mistake. Today I didn't balance; turns out the money went into a 2nd safe. I don't need to tell you that not everyone is a good teacher. I can't wait to get out of this.

Quit whining. I just got a job as a teller from a job where we worked 12 hour shifts on rotating schedule that switched from days to nights. Your store needs to hire some ppl.

So how do people get hired as tellers without much experience?

I'm 23 now, about to go into my last year of university for finance, haven't worked too much though, 3 mall jobs for a few months each when i was 16/17, and worked as an admin/research assistant for my old man's company for 6 years. Started a soccer team with my buddies in the local amateur league, and i coach my little sister's team, despite all this i'm still having no luck...
any ideas?
Thanks!

You don't have to have related experience in order to get hired. You need to learn to find situations and skills that you can transfer from the one job to the next. If you can show them that the experience that you have had in your past jobs could help in this job then you have a good chance of getting the job. A bank teller is an entry level job, the most you need is a high school diploma. If your about to get a degree in finance they'll see that as a great positive.

No bank would hire someone for just one month. Especially these days.

I started as a teller with absolutely no experience, including none in cash handling. I'm doing Teller IV work, and I've only been on the job 3 weeks (iuncluding 1 week training outside of the bank). The training was pretty much a joke. You don't learn anything until you get into the bank.
Being a bank teller is harder than you think. You have to watch for all sorts of things, know all sorts of things including getting to know your customers and deal with sometimes extremely rude customers. But, I really enjoy my job. I work with some great people, and most of our customers are very nice and come prepared to make our jobs easier.
To make referrals, we just mention the product to a person and talk a little bit with them. Then we fill out a referral sheet. So, if that person does decide to come in and open an account AT ANY BRANCH, our names will pop up as the referrer.

I am the Branch Manager at a local bank and has been for several years. My goal is to contribute to the entire team... their job and responsibilities on a daily basis, doing all aspects of the job within my branch. The tellers' job is one of the most difficult, hands on decision making with every client within retail banking. The decisions that the tellers have to make on a daily basis can be very successful and demanding. I have learned to greatly appreciate my tellers more and enjoy taking the time in working with them on a regular basis. This way they can understand the decision making process along with the coaching needs in making sure that a extra set of eyes are always beter than one. Pleae take time to appreciate your tellers!

I am just beginning the application process for a teller position with one of the largest banks in the country. Thank you to everyone who posted here, this information will help me going forward in terms of what to say in an interview (if I get one). I am becoming more and more excited about it! This will be a huge career change for me - long story - so any additional advise would be very helpful.

In your resume include as many cash handling, customer service, and sales experiences you can. Also In your resume try to show that you have good problem solving skills. I'm also in the application process and those credentials helped me get an interview.

Most dont put ads on the internet. Go to the specific banks website and if they dont have anything on there about employment call or go in to get an application.

You may have already finished your studies and found a job by the time my response is posted. From my experience, you have excellent extra curriculum activities to put on your graduate CV. But academic performance is another key deal breaker. You dont need to be a straight high distinction student to get a promising job (but it helps if you want to do investment banking or management consulting). It is a rule of thumb that fails are big no-nos and you need a story to justify it. A credit average should be enough for a job in the big four banks or accounting firms in general. I was a commerce graduate so i cannot offer any better advice. Good luck!

Ive been working as a CSR (teller) at CIBC and im starting my 3rd week now. For those of you looking to get hired within the banking industry just make sure you are mentally prepared for what is to come. The 4 week training classes really isnt all too great, you really dont start your REAL training until your on the job helping clients. One thing I can say is that if anyone has worked in any customer service related industry dealing with people before than this job is for you. The way I see it, the interaction between clients should be 20% transaction and 80% communication/good conversation. **NOTE balancing at the end of the day can be stressful if your not balanced. Make sure you are constantly throughout the day cross referencing your work and making sure your drawers and files are organized. Organized being the key word here.

You should try writing a special Cover Letter for Hiring Manager. Include all the skills you have. I did that and all the banks Im applying to are all calling mw for interview. Btw I have one tomorrow. So excited! I think that should help. Good Luck!

The only advice I can give you is every customer, every time, talk to them , make them feel important, make them feel they are the only one that matters. Whether it be an account that has $4 or whether it's account that has 4 million, it's every customer every time.

Years ago, I worked as a bank teller in college. It was then I realized that I didn't have any people skills and that this kind of job wasn't for me.

I am only 19 years old and I recently graduated from beauty school, I have lots of customer service experience, retail experience, and experience in handeling money. I had an interview on friday morning and they liked what I could offer, and the experience that I could bring into the bank. I got a call back about two hours later with a job offer. I have no recent job experience, besides the experience that I had working in the student salon. So, if you have anything that you can offer like this, make sure to put that into a resume.
