Being a barista is much like being a bartender. You listen to your customers; feel them. They want to trust you and they want you to listen to them. To be an outstanding barista, you need to make small talk with customers, make them feel special. Plenty of folks come in to coffeehouses because they want to connect with the barista...they're lonely, or just need to tell you something about their day. Care. It's such a rewarding job when you do it well.

To be a good Barista doesnt only take being friendly and smily and "listening to their lonley tales of life". There is defently going to be ppl coming in wanting their coffee a certain way, for example... no foam, extra foam, flavor certainties and so on, not only that, its best to thibk of it as yourself going in and paying for what your making them, make it a little hotter then what theyd sip right away, because it will last longer, which is 160, unless they request lower... fill it a little over the top, with foam, so they sip that top layer of espressoness foam off the top before they put the lid on and think "omg, that is good" Barista skills, coffee making, and constumor, are more important then they seem... and doing it well is a talent, thats all i have to say, peace and good luck to all that come across this ;)
