Seeking to bartend off the books, How do u go about finding a cash paying bartending job in nyc?

Hello, I lost my job and now i am collecting, but its just not enough to pay my bills. I am really seeking a bartending job off the books so i can make ends meet. I have some experience in bartending and private parties but where do i go to find more cash paying private events? Can anyone give me advice on how to go about it? do I ask them when i am applying for the job or do i wait to get hired and then bring up the subject? I feel that you have to know someone to get this type of cash job, is that true?
