The number one trait is the ability to listen. A sophisticated analysis of something irrelevant is a waste of time. Whatever you do has to meet the needs of the client, even though sometimes you might have to help them figure out what that is.

Number two is technical expertise with the ability to put down the sledge hammer and use the simplest tool that will do the job.

Number three is the ability to explain what you have done and why you have done it that way. Using the simplest appropriate tool is a big help here.
