I started by going to my local school district. They advised me to go to the license branch, and I took the written test. Once I passed the written test, then I went back to the school district, and they then trained me for the driving portion of the test. This took about a month of going in every day and actually training with another driver for about an hour a day until I felt comfortable enough with the bus. Once I felt comfortable, then I scheduled my driving portion of the test, and went and had that. I passed the first time on both tests. Once I did that, I then started sub driving for the district. I was lucky, because there was a spot immediately open as an aide, so I not only was able to be an aide, but I could sub drive as well until a permanent spot came open and was able to obtain my own route. I was then hired permanently within the first year as a regular driver. Salaries in our area start out at $15, and don't vary too much from that.
