I know there has been several postings back and forth about the board's requirement for 'challenging the lvn' "method3" and once again i will say that the board has the final say. I spoke with the board today regarding the requirement for qualifying for this method because i had heard back from students regarding 'a change' well....

the good news is that they are giving credit to CNA's that work in LTC/SNF for the med surg experience (even though its not in acute setting) which is great news to many.
The bad news is that the pediatric/ maternity continues to require "paid experience". They stated that you 'may take a theory course (30hrs) with a clinical portion (16hrs) ONLY IF it is offered at a college such as a community college. "An adult school/online school/private school/private course won't qualify".

Every application is reviewed and we have probably all heard stories of exception to this 'rule' but i wanted to share this.

The pharmacology theory course requirement conts to be required, and again, many providers out there; myself included-- so look at the courses and make sure it fits your budget and needs. good luck!(mededprn.tripod.com/) hope this information is helpful!

Hi Anna,

Thank you so much for the valueable information that you have provided. Your time and response to our questions is GREATLY appreciated by many of us.

You mentioned that the board stated that we may take a college course (30 hours with a 16 hour clinical). Do you personally know of any community college that offers such course? I will do some research too, I was just wondering if you had that info already.

Thanks!

Jolita in Anaheim, California said: Trisha, challenging the board means that if you have worked like for example with patient or client for almost 5 years at least, and have taken 54 theory hours in Pharmacology, you can challenge the board and take an exam to become an LVN. You need to review first of all to prepare yourself in that exam. Like me for example, I was a CNA ( nursing assistant ) for almost 6 years. I have been working in different hospitals and nursing home up to this time. I have enrolled in a pharmacology class and got a certificate which was already certified and accepted by the board. So, I can now challenge the board for LVN exam.I need to review first in order to pass the exam....

My name is Cheryl and I've worked in Private Duty Homecare for 5 years and I've got my certificate for Nursing Assistant in 2006 from a Community college along with doing clinicals at a local rehab center. I've been trained in transfers, vitals, I was planning to use my Nursing Asst Certificate as a prerequisite but decided if I can use my skills in challenging the board. I'm aware of having to take a 54 hour pharmacology course as well. What do you think I should do?

Hi Yesi,
I don't know of any--i even asked the board and they weren't able to refer me to any-- when i pushed the issue, she was just adamant about where it COULDN'T be done(i'll keep my comments to myself about my opinion on that conversation). The six weeks can be done in a clinic/rehab/juvenile hall/psych facilities etc..
I will keep researching it as well since IF you can get an 'accepted' peds theory class getting the 16 clinical hours would be a breeze--when you say six weeks though it becomes more challenging... It could still be done--usually easier to get at the type of places mentioned above. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED! where there's a will, there's a way!

Thanks Ana,

Quick question about my dilema...

If the managers/supervisors of the facilities that one has worked for in the past are no longer working at the facilities, what does one do?

I ask because I called my past employers and 3 of my past managers are no longer there! The ones there now do not know me at all.

When submitting my employment verification, does the Human Resource Dept, fill out the paper work and then send it to the current manager?

I know what you mean about the CA LVN board...I too called (regarding my dilema) and I was told that it is up to the current manager/supervisor wether or not he/she signs the form because their license is at stake. She told me that if my previous managers are not longer working where I used to work at that I have a slim chance of getting the required forms signed because she doubts that the current managers are going to verify the forms without them "witnessing" my work!

I have the required work experience, BUT my managers are no longer there!

What should I do Anna?

hi,
I don't know how helpful i can be, i guess what i would do would be to try to look for RN's that i worked with when i was there--google her if i had to to see if she'll sign it! Maybe look really hard for my evaluations from when i worked there and print up my job description and show up with it so they have something to go on. The verification form clearly states "demostrated" 'yes or no' on very, very basic procedures. I would argue that your CNA certificate already confirms you are ABLE to do it/the job description says you DID it all you are asking is for them to basically confirm employment dates. If given the choice i would go to the manager directly--the manager will refer you to human services if they have to but hopefully you can get this signed then and there...good luck!

This is to Central valley girl in stockton.I'm in Cali frm OH. the facility I worked for(10 yrs)was closed down by the state. I had to track down the RNs and send the paper to them at their knew facility. They fill it out and send it back to me in a facilty envelope. I'm sure some of thoses nurses are still in the area it's just going to take a moment to find them. Now all I have to do is save that Pharm class money on a CNA pay. Good luck to you!

Hi Anna,

The info you gave me is really clearing things up in my mind, but I just want to claify some info before I go and search for the RN's that I worked with. Please correct me if I am wrong =D

1) The verification forms can be signed by any of the RN's that I worked with? For example the charge nurse? Or any other RN's?

2) Or do the forms ONLY have to be signed by the unit manager?

Thanks Anna...you are AWESOME!

Hi Yesi,
The verification has to be signed by "RN director or Supervisor". All i can tell you is that for example: I am a Nurse Practitioner and in my role i "Supervise" RN's, LVN's, CNA's and MA's. I was not the 'RN director' however, i felt I qualified under 'supervisor' and felt comfortable signing the verification for applicants i 'supervised'.
I read and re-read the application and don't see anywhere where it contradicts my interpretation...
I truly do believe the ca vn board is not looking to 'roadblock' you, they are verifying your experience and doing the best they can to do so with the information you provide,
Good luck, don't get discouraged.

Congratulations I think you are headed the right career. Going to the LVN Bridge program, you have to accumulate 48months of paid work experience in medical surgical (and the good news is the board BVNPT now give credit to work experience in Long term care and skilled nursing facilities,)in dialysis, clinic and outpatient is up to 8 months credit, 1.5 months experience in each (maternity and pediatrics.) So, goodluck and take care while at work, okay? You may send me email @ ihgmethod3_equivalency@yahoo.com. keep in touch we offer the LVN Bridge Program.

Either way I think you are headed the right direction, but I guess being Certified as a CNA your opportunity is broader because then you can work anywhere while having an MA certificate you can only work in Medical offices I guess. And if your long term goal is going with the Bridge programs then start the CAN Training and get certified. There is a 24 days CNA training you can email me at ihgmethod3_equivalency@yahoo.com if you need more info. Goodluck and Happy Holidays.

To all CERTIFIED NURSES AND OTHER NURSES:

BE AWARE THAT LAS VEGAS NEVADA HAS THE MOST BACKWARD, STUPID NURSING SYSTEM IN AMERICA. IT SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE 50 STATES. THEY HAVE THE WORST NURSING SYSTEM, HOSPITAL SYSTEM AND ATEH DIRECTORS AND STATE OFFICIALS SHOULD "HIDE THEIR FACES IN SHAME".

EXAMPLE: If you let your license laps, you CANNOT renew them without going back to "a school" if you cannot find the last charge nurse you worked under. The will NOT even take the suggestion to take a recent TEST to see what you know. IT IS THEIR WAY OR NO WAY...Nevada Nursing Board WILL NOT ACCEPT NOR RECOGNIZE AN LVN THAT DID NOT GRADUATE FROM A NURSING SCHOOL, NO MATTER HOW MUCH TRAINING SHE HAS AND WITH HER CEU'S AND CREDENTIALS AS A CALIFORNIA (OR ANY STATE) CERTIFIED LVN/LPN.

This city has over 100,000 FORECLOSURES IN HOMES, 7.4% UNEMPLOYMENT, ADS IN THE PAPER "BEGGING" FOR CNA'S AND LPN'S, BUT THE "STUPID, UNGODLY" "GREEDY" DIRECTORS OF THE NURSING BOARD HERE AND RENO WOULD RATHER PEOPLE BE HURTING AND OTHERS STARVING BEFORE THEY WOULD EVEN CONSIDER MAKING ALLOWANCES FOR THE SITUATIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES BROUGHT ON BY THE ECONOMY. THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THIS CIITY AND STATE IN MY OPINION AND EXPERIENCE ARE ENTIRELY SO "STUPID" AND BACKWARD THAT I MUST TRY TO GO BACK TO CALIFORNIA OR ANOTHER CITY. EVERYONE IS MOVING FROM THIS CITY. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A CITY THAT HAS A "DEVIL WITH A PITCHFORK" ON THE STRIP ON TOP OF A BAR NAMED DEVIL? LOST, LOST, LOST PEOPLE.
LOS ANGELES IS TRULY "THE CITY OF ANGELS". WITH ALL OF THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS, IT IS STILL BETTER THAN ANY WHERE IN NEVADA.

PLEASE POST THIS TO SAVE TIME, MONEY, EXPENSES AND HEART ACHES FOR THOSE WHO "HEAR" THERE IS MORE WORK HERE AND THIS IS A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE". JUST LIKE THE SCHOOL TEACHERS THAT WERE "IMPORTED FROM DALLAS TEXAS" AND GIVEN A GOOD JOB. NOW THEY ARE LAYING THEM OFF AND THEY ARE LOSING THEIR HOMES....THE SCHOOLS HERE ARE BAD...CHILDREN DON'T KNOW ANYTHING BUT "SEX".

In my opinion if your goal is to be an RN go to a community college and start the pre-requisites for RN. I personally would not pay for a private school for either a CNA program, LVN program or RN program for that matter when you can get the education through community colleges/adult schools etc at a fraction of the cost. When I talk about 'challenging the LVN' this applies to CNA's who are 'getting credit' by their experience and the ONLY thing they need is a pharm class to sit for the LVN board-- then, hands down, get the LVN so you can transition to a community /state college RN program while making more money for less physical work. You don't have to take my word for it--you just have to look at the job boards to see that getting your RN is what provides the most opportunities in terms of pay/hrs/compensation. I know going straight for RN is not an option for many- I know I had to go the long way around but if can go for the RN directly take advantage of the opportunity. Good luck,
Anna

Yeah your right Anna, that is why I recommend to CNA Training seekers, places where they can even go for a free on site training while they get paid as well because I am very much aware of the current "financial crash" but you know there are people that cannot go for a month or 2 CNA Certification training because of their current jobs but want to become CNA Certified, so a 24 days vacation from work in exchange to a 24 days CNA Certification training is a huge gain for future opportunities in the field of healthcare and a door opener to future health career advancement thru bridge programs. Have a wonderful year of the Rat.

Hi there, as far as our experience with students enrolled in our program, they are medical assistants with work experience like you have and the board(BVNPT)gave them credit of up to 8 months. To me your maternity and pedia experience needed for challenging the LVN exam is covered, but the medical surgical part which the board requires 48 months of experience is not. What we suggest to our students is for them to just submit their application to the board with all the work experience they have and let the board determine if they are get approved, that is if you are willing to spend around $200(a money order of $100 payable to BVNPT to process your application and a Live Scan Finger Print.) Am suggesting this idea because of your experience but am not sure, also I suggest you go visit the boards website www.bvnpt.ca.gov find the link to method3 and read the whole information. You can send me email to ihgmethod3_equivalency@yahoo.com goodluck.

Am hoping this reply is not too late, to answer your question you need at least 5 years of paid nursing work experience, 48 months of medical surgical(including work experience in a Long Term Facility, Skilled Nursing)and maternity/pediatrics too. So make sure you will be working in the right place, places where you can accumulate credits towards challenging the BVNPT board for LVN Licenese. You can email me at ihgmethod3_equivalency@yahoo.com, goodluck.

??? Where do you get your info??? Did you even check the board of nursing??? It says nothing like that. Here is direct quote from the Nevada board of nursing regarding license renewal:
"A licensee who fails to renew his license may have his license reinstated by completing an application for renewal, submitting payment of the reinstatement fee in addition to the renewal fee and submitting all information required to complete the reinstatement."
Almost no states recognize an LVN/LPN licensee that has not graduated from an approved nursing school...

RE: NEVADA BOARD OF NURSING

Hi: I did call Pat at the Board of Nursing in Las Vegas. I took my CEU's and because I worked through Registry, three of them, which either closed or changed managers, there are NO records of the last job that I worked. Because I can't remember where I worked and the name of the Charge RN, they WILL NOT RE INSTATE MY LICENSE; I am active in California and they should accept that, but they won't. I believe it is DISCRIMINATION because I am a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and the doctor's really called on me in the hospital to help them, while the RN's were not asked. I think it is jealousy, envy and stupidity on the part of the Nevada Nursing Board. It is all about money. My patients get well quicker and therefore they leave the hospital sooner. That means...less gross for the hospital. It is a FARCE in my opinion. They are so FAR BEHIND TIMES...What do you expect of a City that calls itself SIN CITY? SIN means Backwards, Out Casts to Society, Transgressors of the Laws (both God and man). A city that Boasts it is SIN CITY, IS JUST THAT !

I don't know if I will ever get my license reinstated until the
present "sinners" "controllers" are removed. Then I won't care!
It is the people that suffer. I am also an Esthetician, can do Marketing and have a film background. So they are the losers!
Sorry to have such a bad opinon of the NEVADA NURSING BOARD, but it is a reaction to their IGNORANT ACTIONS. I also called Reno.
I could not get any help there. And IF A CNA in California takes the Course and becomes an LVN, I was told by PAT that the LVN will not be allowed to work as an LPN here in NEVADA. Yet this state is begging for help in the hospitals. What a MESS! The State should step in and FIRE ALL OF THEM AND START WITH "PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON". SHAME, SHAME ON THE NEVADA BOARD OF NURSING. *Incidentally, I don't know any of them personally and I have only met "Pat".

I got my information directly from the Las Vegas Board of Nursing, from PAT. I also called Reno and spoke with someone there but I don't remember the name. I have tried to reinstate this license for two years...they purposely have tried to make it difficult for me. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION OF THE WORST KIND and YES IT HAPPENS HERE.

"A licensee who fails to renew his license may have his license reinstated by completing an application for renewal, submitting payment of the reinstatement fee in addition to the renewal fee and submitting ALL INFORMATION required to complete the reinstatement." INFORMATION REQUIRED IS: THE NAME OF THE LAST CHARGE RN THAT A CNA WORKS UNDER.

Maybe I am confused... Do you have and active CA LVN license and at one point had an active Nevada LPN license that you failed to renew in time and now they won't renew it? Is that right? That just seems odd. Did you obtain your CA LVN license by challenging the LVN boards as a CNA? Or are you a CNA right now?

Hi this is Kristy in Las Vegas.

I am from California. I moved to Las Vegas and got my Certified Nursing License because I have an Active Certified Nursing License and Home Health Care License in California. I worked in Las Vegas for almost 2 years, then I became sick. While I was sick, my License lapsed. After it Lapsed, I tried to Renew it. Because during the time that I was sick, the Registeries that I was working through sold, changed management etc. there were no records for some reason. I could not remember the last place that I worked and the name of the Charge Nurse. I was told by Pat at the Las Vegas Nevada Board of Nursing to take my CEU'S, which I did. Then when I went to get my license, they refused BECAUSE I COULD NOT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE RN that I worked under. I was sick for 8 months due to a family situation, which brought undescribeable stress. I PRESENTLY STILL HAVE MY CALIFORNIA LICENSE WHICH IS ACTIVE, BUT THEY WILL NOT USE THAT AS RECIPROCAL TO GIVE ME MY NEW LICENSE. I believe this is a form of DISCRIMINATION.

I have more education than most Certified Nurse Assistants as I am also BOARD CERTIFIED AS A HOLISTIC HEALTH PRACTITIONER SINCE 1995 AND HAVE BEEN PRACTICING SINCE 1983. But, the board here has such ignorant power seeking, egotistical people in position that they would rather the patients have inferior assistance than to renew my license.

Well, maybe it is just as well. Yesterday, for the second time since I have been here, a doctor was killed in her office. Two years ago, the same thing happened. Maybe the Patients get fed up with the lack of knowledge in the medical field here and they are tied of being sick, so they kill the doctor and themselves. WHAT IF THEY DECIDED TO KILL EVERYONE IN THE OFFICES? It seems that being in the medical field is a Hazzardous job here. I know that one of the hospital systems was installing "keyed" door in every corridor when I was working a couple of years ago.

Do you mean certified nursing assistant? Because there is not such thing as a certified nursing license. There is LVN/LPN or RN. CNAs do not have licenses, they have certification. That's what confused me, sorry. I thought you were talking about LPN/LVN. That's why I questioned what you said. Have you asked for the board to give you in writing the reason why they will not renew your certification?

Hello, I sent you on a regular email form information. This form will only accept a few sentences.

My goal is to take the Pharmacology Course and bridge to LVN/LPN. I may move back to Los Angeles but I would have to have the job waiting first. The economy is tough here and LA and expenses are higher there. But yes, I do need your help. Please refer to the other email that I have sent you for my phone number etc.

Thanks

Kristy in Las Vegas NV

This course is designed to meet the 54 hour pharmacology requirement for eligibility.

But you need to take a Pharmacology Course. I took this one and did well learnga.com/Pharmacology.aspx

Now I'm thinking of taking a bridge program to RN.

Could someone email with a local place that I could get in contact with to do the cna/lvn program. This is my 2nd year of nursing school and I wont to go ahead and get my LVN before I complete my RN so that I can make money to help me pay for schooling.

Hi, I am interested in challenging the LVN borad for California. My back ground are; medical assistant for 4 years, certify phlebotomist for 2 years because of the new state law. But I had but drawing bloods for all the time that I was working as a medical assistant. I had already completed my Pre-req for nursing, and am now waiting to get in. Now I am currently working as a NA for children's hospital for about 1 year now.

Do I qualify to take the board for LVN. As I would love too, because I no that it would cut so much time off nursing school. I would eventually like to get my master in Nursing. I am already working on my upper division courses for my BS and will apply it towards my RN to get a BSN, BUT all I am lacking is my RN.

I would like to get there fast as I am getting old.

thank you much.

I just called about the Minnay Institute of health sciences. I'm thinking it's too good to be true. They are approved by the board for the pharm. needed, and they are working on a review program to prepare for the enclex. Did anyone else check this out? I tend to jump at things...
