How did you get your start doing CTO work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

My first CTO role was as an interim CTO via consulting work. This was a great stepping stone in my career as the client was comfortable with me as a consultant and future employers were then able to look back at that role as experience in the position. The downside, however, is that most full-time employers (sadly) look down on consulting work.

In my experience there is no educational background that makes for a good CTO. It's more about personality and experience.
