My nephew is interested in becoming a Large Vessel Captain. Would appreciate recommendations on which schools to attend and how to get started. Thanks. |

Going to need sea time first. Start as a deckhand on smaller vessels and work your way up. Vessels offshore over 100 gross tons require USMMD/Z card(Merchant Mariners Document). STCW-95(Basic Safety Training) for STCW vessels. Vessels under 100 gross tons,i.e. Crew Boats, Utility Boats and Mini-Supply Boats do not require this, however some companies require additional training, which more often than not is company paid!! Websites like www.maritimejobs.com and others list jobs available or simple queries of search engines help. For schools, check the National Maritime Centers website for a list of all USCG approved schools/courses nationwide.
Good luck in your endeavours! |
