I dont know.Ive shown them nothing but respect.maybe its cuz they're all yuppies and I'm just a blue-collar stiff I guess. What can I do to fix all this? I'm a damn good carpenter, I can read plans, do stairs and rafters, roof, hang drywall, sidewall, paint and I do seamless finish work.I can take a laborer and build a house.Yet I cant get a damn job!!!Whats more is I have other skills to.I did landscaping for 2 years, cooking for 6months,moved furniture for about a year and in my own time Ive become very good with computers, installing software/hardware and virus removal etc..Yet I cant get a job!!!I'm losing my mind.I'm willing to do anything and work for cheap. What do I do? To make matters worse, I have a felony on my record for being a knucklehead when I was younger. So now I cant even join the army which I tried.I dont know what to do.Everyday I scan the papers, this site and every other job listing out there career builder, craigslist, etc..I respond via email or phone call to any one that I remotely have a chance to get and out of every 50 or so ,I may get an interview, none of which have been fruitful. If anyone is out there who can give me a job doing anything please email me at dyson412@yahoo.com CONTACT FLATIRION CONSTRUCTION & CHECK THE JOHN JAMES AUDOBON BRIDGE PROJECT IN NEW ROADS LOUISIANNA.THEY WILL & DO NEED CARPENTERS & THIS IS NON UNION & THE PAY IS NOT BAD,YOU WORK 6 DAYS A WEEK 10-12 HOUR DAYS & YOU GET OVERTIME.CONTACT MICK. |

I have been laid off in NC Then moved family to Wash State to work. I started work for three months and was laid off. My house in NC was robbed and stripped of copper, toilet and house fixtures. The insurance was cancelled because no one was in house and someone else got inside and set it on fire. I ended up getting lucky and received employment in Miss so I moved the family to Miss rented a house then the economy got worse after 7 months laid off again. This time was able in three months to get a job in Morristown Tenn. I moved the family there and the GM Crisis hit hard after 5 months and out of work again. In the meantime we have used all the 401k, savings, credit cards, and we do not have any family to beg from it is just me and wife and kids. I had to give up family dog and cat because we could not afford to feed them. I have sold just about everything we had.The unemployment in TN will not give me any unemployment because I did not work in State long enough to receive.

I have been unemployed for 14 months. I did get unemployment in Florida ($275 a week - woo hoo). I also started doing substitute teaching. I filed for bankruptcy for my credit card debt. My car is twelve years old and paid for. I got food stamps for a while. I got a roommate. I am surviving - and that's all. I am very fortunate I don't have kids to support. I know there are a lot more people far worse off than me. |

I am a month behind on my car payment, I stretch the groceries. I called an employer that interviewed me a few weeks ago, to just follow up, and their corporate office told them to hold off on filling the position. I don't get discouraged over it, I know I'll be working again. But I do get frustrated, because I am a good person, with great job skills, ethics, and leadership. |

I live in jersey and was working in NYC on staff full time at my job as an audio engineer. Last April I got put on freelance. since then I've worked twice, once for 4 weeks and once for 6. I decided to go back to school for a teaching cert. Started in Sept on a TUITION WAIVER from NJ (not sure how many states have those) and got into the 599 PROGRAM through NY state which allows you to get unemployment while in school. Since school isn't costing me anything, I'm taking out the federal loans which have very low interest and will be back in the job market next June. It's not working yet but it's surviving...and moving forward...and getting skills. We do what we can. I want to work, I hate this more than anything but I'm doing my best and that's all I can ask for in this economy. |

Rebecca, I agree with you. Times are very tough for everyone.I feel awful for them. I have taken a year out of my job to help my fiance figure out what to do as there's no work left at home for him. I miss my job like crazy and can now see how hard it is to just start something different. I would love if you could send me some information about this 'better way' you know of.

I am a union carpenter originally from TN. Been up here for 10 years. I have been out of work going on 4 months now with not much hope of it coming back any time soon. Just pulled money out of annuity to pay off most things so we can survive this storm. I am lucky to have at least the means to do that. My heart is hurting to read these stories....of such bad times and such disasters for all who are unemployed. What has happened to this country? I served in Vietnam, I vote, I pay my taxes, I don't hurt anyone or anything, I respect everyone's views and feelings.....This country is bankrupt but won't change their ways....We have the ability to create jobs here and tax those who send jobs overseas. It is just such a sad state of affairs....I wish everyon the best of blessings in the coming days and months...I truly do. |

I'm a twenty nine year old educated man from Upstate New York, having relocated to CA in 2006. My situation is very similar to the series of posts above. I lost my job a week before Christmas, and have been collecting unemployment since. The benefits the state pay aren't enough for me to cover my basic necessities, e.g. rent car payment. I suspect I will lose my car and apartment within the next 30-60 days. Then, throw the in the fact I completed a year of law school, and couldn't get funding for my second year because Well's Fargo's requirements were ridiculous, as a result of the economic crisis. The result, dreams put on hold. Due to all the misfortune, there is a deep sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Possessions no longer have any meaning and goals have become dreams just out of reach. Now mere survival is all that matters. |

I had a business in New Orleans and lost it in the hurricane..have been struggling ever since. Moved to Wash. DC and was laid of a year later just in time for the holidays. I have been out of work for months, have sent countless resumes..dealt with headhunters, spent face time on leads and traveled 100s of miles for interviews to no avail. I am 45 have had a solid career for 30 yrs in food service and have been at the top of the game in the chef ranks. Now I am penniless and will lose my apt in 2 weeks and my truck after that. No one will hire older people and no one will give someone with my experience a lesser job as they know it's just temporary. I am at my wits end and really don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs and I have given my life to my career and now I feel like saying goodbye. I put faith in God but, as blasphemous as it sounds,I see no hope anymore and as strong as I am, I can honestly say..I'm scared. |

Oddly..I have certification as a close protection specialist both here and from the SIA in the UK.I've been fully vetted by some of the best in the world and also have training in Advanced Protection in Hostile environments. It was another career path I started on and couldn't take the time neccesary to pursue it, I had to earn a living. Now I'm dying. |

I truly wish I had the words of comfort. I don't consider myself a religious man, but this may sound a little bit like it; in your darkest hour and when things seem their worst, don't give up.Talk with people at your favorite restaurant, keep applying for work anywhere, stay busy. All of a sudden a door will open and your life will change.

All here are great people. Bad times for all indeed. The American dream has come to fruition as the American nightmare. Keep your head down, work faithfully and you are now rewarded with living on the street. It can be worse,,I know...but also knowing it will be is of very little comfort. I've never whined about things..lost everything in that Katrina, picked it up and went ahead full speed. Is this my reward? I have always gotten through life with my ability to lose myself in my work. Now I am lost without it. I will be flat broke by the end of next week. Also...I don't know how I started posting on the carpenters forum...I just typed in " I have lost everything" and this came up. I am in a dark place I never thought I would get to and just started typing. |

I have run a remodeling business for 12 years and have been working for 23 years and have never collected unemployment. I spent 10 years rebuilding my home. I know that if this work situation keeps up I will lose everything I worked for. All hope may be gone i have worked a total of 15 weeks in the past year. Savings are gone. Can't afford to advertise. I have many skills and can't get a job. Thanks Obama for the change. I will probably lose my house soon if I didn't have two young kids and wife i would live in the mountains off the land. |

I've been laid off now for two years and 2 months and no luck for a job. I have 29 years experience in the semiconductor industry and with college. I have sent out nearly 400 resumes and not even one one on one interview. Most of the jobs I apply to I don't even hear back from or know if they got them for there is not contact numbers or address contact of which stinks. My unemployment is exhausted and I now have health problems of which I'm now on State Disability for. My doctor says I can go on permanent disability for my health problem, but I got denied the second time. I'm single and have a 20 year old son that lives with me that is bipolar and he too has not been able to locate work. My State Disability runs out in November of this year and I will have no income or medical insurance for me and my son unless I get approved for permanent disability. I have no close family that can help me or my son and will soon be homeless and possibly lose everything I have worked hard to have for me and my son. I can't understand how our country has gotten to this economic mess. Back when I was drawing unemployment I tried to get food stamps and medi-cal and was told I did not qualify because I was getting to much in unemployment, but yet people come to this country that have never lived nor worked here and get food stamps, medi-cal, medicare, cash aid, housing, etc. Something is bad wrong with this picture when people that truly need help and have lived and worked here can't get help it makes me sick. I feel for all of you posted on this site and it saddens me to read all these posts of all of us that have worked so hard and look at us now. I never thought I would ever be in this mess. I will pray for us all that God would send His help and mercy to all of us in our need. |

My husband lost his job five months ago due to a very small mathematical error at work, that lost the company no money at all (the amount that would have been lost was only $300). He is college educated and has not worked except for temporary work. He is looking hard. I am also college educated, I worked for seven years as a high school English teacher, but resigned from my job in order to be a stay-at-home mom. Right now, I am eight months pregnant and really unable to find a job until after the baby comes. We are burning through our retirement funds just to live and pay expenses and will probably lose our home. It is so hard to see everything you have worked so hard for taken away so quickly, and I have to admit that it just makes me cry to think that no one seems to care to help us or our young children. All I can say is to pray, and maybe the Lord will help our country and help us. May God bless you all. |

I can understand all theses comments and empathize with the circumstances, our Government has sold us out. The American people have supported everyone and every country for so long there is nothing left for us now, when we need help. I have Yet to see a foreign country step up to help the American Economy problems that we have.

I've lost my home like many others.I moved into my wood shop and converted part of it into a tiny apt. After almost 40 years of woodworking praise this is the best I can do?What kills me is the scams that are going on and the greedy people knowing you need work just to eat let alone try to keep what you have left are now offering you about a quarter of the minimum you needed to get by just a couple years ago.The generation of WWII that built this great nation are rolling in their graves.Look what we have done.We have taken all of the great foundations that they started and squandered them for the fast dollar. The greedy people are on all levels and will not stop until we stop them.We will be farmed until we decide as a body that we will not be farmed. |

I thought my family was prepared, living within our means, to end up losing it all. Just a few years prior to my husband losing his job in 2009, we invested all of our savings into buying a shortsale in our neighborhood. Finally, after renting for years, we had our own home, a daughter in college (living at home with us to save money. She was accepted to a few universities in Chicago near where we live, but did the right thing and chose the more affordable school), and life was really good. I am in my 50s and my husband lost his job of 25 years. We were lucky enough to stretch the severance while my husband looked for a job. My husband graduated college, was upper middle management for a freight company, had a decent salary, and could not find a job ANYWHERE. He finally accepted a position at the bottom of another freight company- making as much as my daughter does now right out of college. It was not what I had hoped, but it was something and I am so grateful. Now, after stretching every dime, we are bracing ourselves to give up the home we just bought. We simply don't have enough for the mortgage, school loans, car pmts and etc. I am afraid to give up our dogs because they are like family. I am also looking for work, and my daughter has been doing all she can to help us. My husband and daughter make just enough money for us to NOT qualify for government assistance. My husband worked 14 hour days for the last 30 years, daughter worked full time in college and now works 50 hrs a week for scraps, and I have maintained administrative jobs. We never had a sense of entitlement. There are 99% just like me out there. After reading the stories, I know that the 99% are starting to have a voice. How soon with life change? After struggling all my life (grew up in rural ohio), FINALLY being at peace, then losing it all again...will life ever go back to normal? |

I am no carpenter but happened upon these story threads and thought I would post. I too have walked the dark, dark road that many of you are still journeying on. No one will understand the depth of despair that you are feeling and the depression you must be feeling....I know them well and the pressure of family and risk of losing everything. I also know there is nothing most can say that will make a difference for when you are drowning you want a hand to lift you out of the water not platitudes or sympathy. If you are in that dark place, you know what I'm talking about...I say keep your focus, don't give up, you are worthy, you are worthwhile not worthless, you are somebody, keep trying for the sake of your family and yourself. Every dark night eventually has a sunrise. Keep your routines, stay sharp, keep your mental focus, your full time job is searching for work. I don't have much but am willing to help anyone with resumes, job strategies, or those at wits end. You can reach me at helpamericafirst@gmail.com. |

Even though we all feel like fireflies in the dark, passing each other with no hope of reaching out to give one and other the light we need so. We’ve got to stay spiritually united if we hope to survive. My life feels like an ice cream cone melting down my hand. It’s so sad to go from a positive motion into a dead stop, followed by a downward spiral, not knowing where the winds will blow you next. Thank God for faith. If I wasn't a Christian, I would have been lost big time 18 months ago when my husband lost his job, not long after I became disabled. But as you said, there are always connections and hopes, if you're looking for the threads and reaching for the stars, even in the blackest nights of your life. My name is Bobbi C. and I'm a newspaper editor/ writer. Thank you for reaching out in the dark, little firefly. |

Im 55. I had health issues and nervous breakdown so I lost house, job, and everything I had. Mom got cancer so I helped her die for 18 months. Went on several interviews and they look at me like I have three heads because I haven't worked in a few years. Got SSDI but I CANNOT live on this! I was an RN for 20 years with an impecable record. I was in the military for 4 years and now it seems we live in a police state where everyone has to be perfect but the politicians! What kind of country is this!?

I had a tattoo and engraving business for 25 years. In 2008 my Girlfriend and partner left for someone she met in internet game chat room. At the same time , the economy tanked and the people I had marketed too. could no longer afford to get work from me because they were all going bankrupt. I went through a string of toxic relationships and a string of toxic helpers at my business trying to stay afloat. All the while getting closer to a nervous breakdown. Finally after filing bankruptcy and hanging on for 6 months after the bankruptcy I closed down. had an accident 3 months before closing that shattered my tibia. I lost my home. my business. I sold everything to eat. All my friends left when I lost my shop. I am 49 and have no formal education so finding work period is hard let alone work that pays a wage you can live on. I am living with a cousin and we are barely keeping a roof and food in our bellies. The whole country is in bad shape and people who still have something ignore those who lose it. I am now pulling myself together after a complete breakdown. I pray and cling to God or I would give up. If we don't start helping each other in this country we are all going to be homeless except the one percent. |

I am so sad and distraught that it takes what I have left to type. I will lose this internet in a few days. Was hoping to find some answer for what to do when you have lost everything and where to go. I cant stay here it is so expensive. I didn't find the answer. I want to blame someone, I have so much anger. My husband who I love and have been married to for 24 years and I fight. Kids are scared. So so sad. |

Hang on. It may be bad but be strong for your children. They don't need or want the material stuff. You will get through this hard time. Keep trying and you will make it to better times. Try not to fight, I know it's hard but ask yourself if you would be fighting if it weren't for financial issues. Internet is free a lot of places. Move away from aspen... Probably not the best place to be for finding employment... Good luck and you have my prayer. |

My heart goes out to everyone on this forum and every other forum I have read. Everything has been gloomy for soo long and my family is now scattered and I have such an overwhelming feeling of being lost in my own mind.Such feelings of helpless and hopeless, I can't even help myself much less anyone else. People are truely blessed with their loved ones still around them and supportive of them and still have a roof over their head with good health. Time grows shorter for me when the last day comes and I can not go any further, it's time for a longlasting sleep. Prayer is all that is left. God Bless all of you and continue Praying and loving each other in place of fighting. ""Help America First"" is what I'm praying for. Thank You for reading this. |

NEVER GIVE UP!! one of the underlying issues within the economic downfall of the once great nation is the fact that so many Americans are giving up.... I am 44 and have 4 children and a wonderful wife. We flourished for years in a strong economy and grew accustomed to a nice life. I hold a high school diploma and over 25years of self educated experience in the now dead construction industry, an experience that escalated me to a cushy PM position combined with a family business that earned my family 0ver six figures, well as many the down spiral of 2007 has taken nearly everything from myself and my family....I scrapped debris today and made $90.00 spent 4hours and $20 in gas ....I am an AMERICAN !!! I will survive !! I will adapt and overcome !! I will not surender to this economy !! we planted a garden of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and several varieties of vegetables... we came together as a family for the first time in years, one unit surviving. we must help our fellow Americans, our neighbors. Proud people will not ask for help...look for the signes and offer a gesture of kindness, food , shelter or simply the time to listen. Pay attention to those around you and follow your gutt, if you feel someone is in need, they probably are and give to a needy American family before you send a donation to Africa!!!! |

I do stay relativly busy. My problem is THE WORKERS! If this applies to you then listen up. Workers these days, especially in construction, because we tend to be less educated and less privalidged, tend to be 1, dope heads, and 2 lazy! To those of you who say thats bull crap! this worsens things for you. Workers used to come out put in a hard day and have pride in what they did and EARN thier money. the harder they worked and the better the quality the more money they earned. the general idea these days is this, if you want to get more work and better quality from me then pay me more. ERRK! sorry charly YOU got it BACKWARD! You get paid according to what you are selling. I as a contractor I am so willing to pay a few dollars more for someone who shows up ON TIME EVERY DAY, WHO HAS PRIDE IN THE THE PRODUCT WE ARE SELLING, WHO DOES NOT MILK THE CLOCK, WHO SETS A FRICKIN NAIL WHEN NESSASARY! Get off the drugs and alchahol, pull your head from your anus, wipe away the tears, and earn your wage. We as contractors do not owe you anything but a check and a thank you at the end of the week. If you want it, go get it, but you must be willing and able to sell your product, (that being yourself,) that being able to get your lazy butt cause I stayed up too late doing what ever it is that you do out of bed, that being prove you are worthy of more money, that being don't side with the lazy bad attitude havin' co-workers. I tell you at the end of the day when they go home to thier shack and "have a cold one", smoke a fat one, or shoot thier dope when they get home. they don't give a crap about you, your wife, your kids, your mortgage, or even if you have food that night. Put your boots on and go. It's not called go to my job it's called go to WORK! |

@woodboss your comment is irrelevant here. I buy your junk and the reason you produce poor quality work is because you feel you are entitled to some high level of profit or some higher station in life because you are a contractor. Anyone with a 6th grade education could be a contractor. A good business owner will get the best workers when they pay the best and provide the best work environment... or do you think that those capitalistic markets your so fond of do not apply to you. You get what you pay for and it sounds like your willing to pay for workers with substance abuse problems. The poor economy is real, perhaps in spite of yourself and luck you haven't felt some of the pain of the prior posts but I think you are due for a big old slice of humble pie. wake up. |

Buyer, I do indeed believe the econamy is slow. My post is from a Contractors point of view. I do stay busy because I demand Quality of my workers. Not luck. I feel empathy for you and others in your position, however it is the people who perform and produce the best who stay. Thats just business. As far as humble pie... I live in a double wide. I'm, I guess you could say, Rich poor folk. by the way, I wear my bags too. |
