What steps to take to become a Category Manager from a Sales Rep?

I've been working on and off with different companies for the past 2 years as Sales Rep. Can someone guide me as to what corners should I watch out for so that I don't get stuck and what are the ways to go up the ladder to become a Category Manager and more? Also I do have a Bachelors in Business Management.
