What are typical chief information security officer salaries?

Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

All in last year's W2 was about $225k (not counting stock) working for a less than $1B revenue software firm with ASPs and very broad compliance requirements. Highest CSO salary I am aware of is $320K (not counting stock). There are likely higher salaries out there. These are the very largest companies with very experienced people (15+ years in security and one hundred+ staff).

The answer depends.

Financial Services companies typically pay the most for their CISOs, followed by large cap, publicly-held companies, and then large universities.

Federal usually pays the least, but there are a few agencies/departments that pay +$200K via Congressional salaries.

Skills...experience managing security teams. There are no short cuts except maybe for Big 4 Consulting Partners that make the switch. They typically have Board-level relationships and experience that net them a CISO position.

And it also depends on state.

Check out this weak sauce:
"Chief Information Security Officer
Publix Employees Federal Credi - Lakeland, FL
Security Program with other organizational security... detect, contain, and correct information security breaches by aligning information security standards and... $73,000 - $75,000 a year"

Weak. They'll get what they pay for in that state. Florida general pays 70% of what other states pay for CISOs.
