Hello I am looking into clinical research as a possible career move and was wondering what type of background everyone has? Can you tell me what your job is like and what you do? Thanks! |

Lisa in Cambridge, Massachusetts said: Hello I am an oncology nurse in a private clinic. Our research coordinator left abruptly and they asked me to fill in. The job is dealing with a lot of little details. If you are a highly organized person who loves details, you'll do well. If not, it may not be the position for you. |

Lisa in Cambridge, Massachusetts said: Hello Originally I was a CCU nurse (in the mid 1980s)- the PI and his coordinators recruited me from the floor. I did not know clinical research was a career option. I've been doing it ever since. I recruited coordinators from the floors in which I was seeking study participants. I've also found some from ADs and word of mouth- and I've recruited coordinators from other research positions. If you have a years worth of nursing experience, you can find loads of clinical research coordinator (manager) jobs at local universities or SMOs like Radiant Research- by looking on their joblines. There is a shortage of clinical research coordinators. Then you need to become good at what you do- and you will have great job security and great salaries! |

What position should I inquire about to make a lateral career move from project coordination in a marketing and software field into medical research? I have obsessed with medical research for awhile, my mother was an RN in rehab and occupational health. I never wanted to practice, just interested in research and development. My degree, alas, is in Art. Is there any hope of a lateral move now with education possibilities? Should I just go back to school full-time? Also, nowhere I have found so far in my research says that a certification is necessary, is it just a "given" to know this? Thanks,

Hey: Don't give up. Keep on trying. When employeers said you are overqualified is that they know your value and have to pay you more. For sure you will get something soon. There is a lot of positions offered in Florida for CSC that requires your background. However July is almost near the corner and Pharmaceutical companies start new studies, and Research Centers hire more CSC. Be patient and fill proud to be overqualified....as you have a great growing potential in front of you.Suggestion: Try to become a member of ACRP or SOCRA. That could also helps. Think about it and good luck! |

Thanks to everyone for their comments! I'm a recent grad (BS Psychology) with minimal clinical research experience (summer research fellowship). I absolutely love this field and I am eager to find a job as a CRC so I can begin climbing the ladder!!! My plan is to find a CRC job to get some work experience on my resume, get certified , and start planning for graduate school (fall 2011 hopefully). I am debating between getting a Masters in Public Health or Masters in Clinical Research. Either way, I want to dedicate my life to research and I need advice as to which direction to take.

PASSIONATE: My "unofficial" recommendation would be that you continue on for a Master's in Public Health. Here's why, for the past 9 months I've been looking for work as a Clinical Research assistant. I've been in Pharmaceuticals for many years and just needed a break from all the travel. I thought this would be a simple transition as I have a great deal of scientific knowledge as well as many different disease states. I'm very skilled at interpreting the data from clinical trials as well. My undergrad degree is in English Literature and research was a big part of my daily studies. Here's the thing...every job I applied to as a Clinical Researcher or CRA, I was turned down because I needed to have a degree in a "related" field. What I've found by networking and talking with employers is that a Master's in Public Health will open many more doors for you. That degree will allow you to work in many other jobs, clinical jobs, private practice, so many opportunities. I'm considering the same Master's at this point. Good luck with your future. |

Hello, I am a recent graduate medical biologist with focus on clinical research. I have a certificate in clinical drug development and I recently finished my master's thesis within clinical trials at queen Silvia children's hospital. I am now looking for a position as a clinical research associate or assistance in Sweden or in the Nordic area. I have applied for many jobs but all of them are required experienced people with a minimum of 2 years monitoring. My problem is, how to find that experience? I would be grateful for any answers to this problem.

This is a catch 22 kind of career. You can't get the job without experience and you can't get the experience without certification and you can't get certification without job experience. It's your typical circular logic that translates to: It's who you know that counts on whether you get a job in clinical research, not what you know. |

Hey guys Ive gotten a job as a research technician, will this allow me to move up in CRC or CRA positions in the future? I cannt seem to find anything online. I took this job because i wanted to get my foot in the research door!! Im at a university thou, will this affect my chances of moving into industry or hosiptal research positions later ? |
|
Patricia in Miami Beach, Florida 12 hours ago |
Hi Fay: What kind of research technician? At least you should start as an Assistant Coordinator. This is an issue of good luck and contacts! For example; I'm sorrounding the 50 years and it took me more than 10 years to get to the position I have now Sr. Clinical Study Coordinator/ Clinical Study Manager.
