trying to get back into IT in Plano, Texas

How can a person who has basic unix systems knowledge (aix,HP,netbackup/veritas,oracle) on an operator level (monitoring, system reboots, run backups) get a ground floor opportunity in a company to learn more responsibilities? maybe become backup specialist/engineer/programming)?
