1. Be flexible. That means sacrificing family obligations, social life outside of the company, and hobbies for your career. You should be willing and able to work any hours around the clock, and relocate anywhere at the drop of a dime to stay in this unstable industry.

2. Be willing to retrain and reinvent yourself on your own dime when the market begins to dwindle for your skillset and make sure that you aim yourself toward an area where demand exceeds the market.

3. Find at least one knowledgable mentor and learn as much as you can from them, and also build a wide network of people in your profession to help you move up the ladder or at least help you stay employed.

1. Make sure when someone tells you of a problem they are having that you listen and show them sympathy for the problem they are having. Even if you can't fix the problem right away (need to order part for example) they will not feel like there being ignored.

2. Find out ways to save the company money (in your department) that you are working for.

3. Never stop learning about new computer technology.

You will need to have good troubleshooting skills, pay attention to little details. And if you ever get a call from a user, and it's a simple thing like the power cable wasnt pushed in, dont EVER treat them like a dumb person. Have patience with users on the phone, and you will need to have good communication with your clients.

To be a good computer tech, study Comptia A+ or MSCE from Microsoft.

I am looking for answers to a couple of acronym certifications.
A+

MCP

MCSE

The reason I ask, is I am not savvy with this terminology and have positions to fill for work at home consumer tech to assist customers with setting up and problem solving various computer issues. Any advise would be very helpful. Even things I shouls ask or even be aware of in pre-screening candidates.

A+ is not an acronym, it's just the name of Comptia's certifications. They start with A+ Essentials, to have A+ complete certification you need to do the A+ Essentials then choose from other three courses. There are: IT Technician, Depot Technician, Remote Support Technician. What I did was the Essentials first (of course) then I chose to get my certifications with IT Technician.
MCSE- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, I've heard it's a harder certification but also on demand just like the A+.
MCP- Microsoft Certified Professional, I've never heard of. But since it's from Microsoft I'll say it should be good also.
I have never been in an interview, so I don't know what kind of questions they ask. I'm only a student trying to get my CISCO CCNA certification.
Good Luck, I hope my post helped you.

Good recipe to be an excellent tech:

- study all the time, e.g./ CBT (computer base training, cram exams, computer hobbyist etc..
- join tech resources sites, e.g./ Tech Republic, Tom's Hardware etc..
- document everything you troubleshoot and install
- be clean and professional
- get certifications e.g./ MOUS, MCP, MCSE, A+, CCNA etc..
- search for effective listening and problem solving techniques
- team focus and find good mentoring and DON'T be a buzzword tech, the majority hate that type of personality
- each time a user needs help on how-to, make sure they do the steps themself with your assistance and DO NOT rush. It makes them feel cheap.
- ** VERY IMPORTANT ** - DO NOT get involve into office gossips.

Voilà enjoy!

Last time I checked.
There are 7 tests to take to get an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) Windows 2000 or whatever OS they're selling now, Server, Active Directory, SQL etc. Once you pass one of the test you can call yourself a MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional). Then when you pass all 7, you can call yourself a MCSE.

Get certified as the above posts say. They seem to not care at all about experience, but they want a piece of paper instead. I got absolutely no hits at all with 10 years exp as a freelance working on every platform imaginable, with references and positive feedback from over 40 clients and 5 small businesses. I took and passed the A+ and CCNA and immediately got offers, and working on more. so yeah get certified.
