I've been in the Masonry Trade since 1971. These are tough times. I am out of work now due to an injury back in June 2009. I fell off of a ladder and tore all but one muscle in my left shoulder, my left hamstring muscle and my right knee. I had surgery to repair my shoulder in July of 2009. I hope to get back to work in a couple of months, but the work has slowed down so much since my accident I'm not sure what to expect. I wish everyone in the construction industry best wishes at this tough time... we will all survive... we just need to hang in there and be positive! |

I know what you mean mastercraft! In a previous post I explained about an injury I had last year that knocked me out of work. I've worked in Cincinnati OH and Denver Co in my life, and still have many friends in those areas. Same report everywhere. My injury forced me to take a look at other options for my life. I am working online these days... it's not easy, but at least I am learning some new skills. Computers are here to stay, and the people I am meeting and working with have a positive outlook on life, which is rare these days! LOL I'm building a blog about my life as Mason for the last 39 years... it's kinda fun and it gives me something to do! Here's a link to it if you care to take a peek: mybricksandstones.com Please remember... it's a work in progress and it's being built by a bricklayer not a computer programmer. Any comments there would be appreciated! |

erainey94@yahoo.com in Marrero, Louisiana said: There are many U.S. companies that hire illegal workers, to do the work for less pay. The state and federal goverment while tax paying citizens are left with no jobs or work. My son is a roofer and has been for about 6 years now, he had worked for several companies, he ALWAYS makes sure that there are no illegals hired where he works, it is not that hard. He usually goes through a staffing agency that checks all the company's credentials and all the people are hired through them. He was forces to quit his job about 2 weeks ago due to his boss doing illegals stuff, he was out of work about a week and a half, got a new job started this past Monday, making $2 an hour more. There is a lot of construction work in Texas, especially this area because there is a huge build up of troops. |

wow I had heard there was alot of work in Texas , but figured it was all being given to the illegals |
|
JackieO in Teaneck, New Jersey 10 months ago |
i don't think illegals are necessarily getting union work, but i think union books are being handed out to people who may not be qualified (or capable) of doing the job. i'm not a b/l, but i know several here in nj - no one is working. i'm talking about guys who have 20+ years in...it is just a horrible time right now. governor is making sure no union is left standing; his campaign against teachers' unions have turned middle class nj folks against each other. no better way to destroy the house...come on you masons....than to break it down from the inside out. sad to say our POTUS is no better. he allegedly did something on Dec 17 extending unemployment benefits - for whom i do not know - but not for any people i know: all "99ers" (people who have been unemployed long enough to go through the 4-tiers of payments). in my life i never would have thought this dry spell would last so long: in fact, i literally banked on it. past jan 2011, we decided against refinancing our home (66 more months and it's ours free and clear - just over 5 years!) and paying for another 20-30. now i'm the only one working, but we're borrowing any shortage from our home equity. even at 300-800 monthly, it's not going to last long. i've always got my ears open for potential job opps outside the construction realm - something less strenuous and not so political for a middle-aged man. i don't know how this country can possibly dig itself out from the hole that was dug for us by a very small group of very greedy people. and now they're down in dc deciding our fate. the country's credit rating goes down and guess whose interest rates will go up? yours & mine. forget about a student loan for your kids; better to work on the jump shot or the long ball. to all on this forum (and everyone else scared and unemployed tonight): i wish you all only success in this, the hardest job market in history. (worse than 1929 b/c there are WAY MORE people now). |

Speaking only for real masons & bricklayers, my husband says nobody in their right mind decides, "I'm gonna be a mason" - the profession chooses the man. It truly is a calling, not a job. All the bricklayers I know talk about bricklaying, and measuring, and concrete - all the time - whether they are working or not. It really is a calling; and you can tell the good ones by how long their work holds up. My husband remembers every single job like a serial killer remembers victims. His first job, 2 brick steps w bluestone treads, still stands at the little house he worked at. Guys...what was your first job? Do you still love it like nothing else? ~Jackie O |

It truly is a calling, not a job. Well i started out hod carrying like most bricklayers but the first time i broke out on my own i laid up a fireplace and was so nervous. I had an idea what the homeowner wanted but when it was done and they were so happy it makes you feel like it was worth it. And I know when I'm laying up a house and the homeowner shows up every once in awhile and says it looks great, we joke after there gone. But they are not use to seeing what we see everyday. What I'm trying to say is thank you for the good job's |

Hi fellow masons i'm from down under{australia} and there's a bit of work here but not like it was. I've been a brickie for 16 years now since i was 15 this crapy, time draining, soul sucking, up and down paying but very rewarding job is all i know. I have worked for myself and ran gangs of blokes my whole life but now i'm thinking that it's not all that i thought it would be... I wish i could do something else but what.. I can't go back to school i'm married with 3 beautiful kids and my amazing wife dosent work {for money} but she works harder than me with our kids so i can't just change jobs it want pay the same. |
