What is the best training for becoming a cook? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective cook?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

My personal experience is that the best training is to start. If you have time and money to go to school than do it. If not find the type of restaurant you want to work and tell the chef you will work for free. While your doing that start reading the books etc.Catering companies are another good bet in the busy season.

Non-traditional paths- go cook on tugboats or up in AK for a year or two.
Be careful what you wish for. The conditions and the crowds can be undesirable.
