Paralegals?

I have read many threads describing a day in the life of paralegals. I read some good things and some horrible things regarding the hours and working with some attorneys. If I am not mistaken, I believe that paralegals are not limited to working with attorneys and they can work for real estate companies and corporations to name a few. I would love to hear the experiences of paralegals that have worked for someone other than an attorney. I am currently working on a degree in sociology with a minor in psychology and I am entertaining the idea of obtaining my paralegal certificate.
