What do you enjoy most about being a corporate trainer? What do you dislike the most? Is it challenging? Are there many opportunities to learn and advance? What keeps you at your job? |

I am new at my job and love it! I am a writer and am being utilized to make current programs more 'fun', etc. more impactful. I have been doing a lot of research on this however, and am wondering if any seasoned veterans have any input on getting employees enthusiastic about training. i know that the revamps I've done so far have been a hit with them.

I believe you get the employees involved early on the learning process. One key thing is get their manager to meet with them to discuss what they want to learn or get out of the training. That way they come into with something they want to accomplish. I like to use games, varied activities, exercises to stimulate all their senses. Some are physical, brain teasers, reflection and team based. I like a combination of all these things to reach everyone unless I know they are adverse to one of these types of learning. Staying positive is a MUST for any good trainer. There's nothing worse then a burned out trainer who is not enthusiastic about what they are teaching. Also keep learning and experimenting with different things. Take an Improv class or acting class. I've been an improviser for 10 years and it has been the best thing I've ever done to make a better trainer. |

I have been in corporate sales and management for 15 years. My true love is teaching and mentoring others. My goal is to transfer the presentation, training and teaching experience that I have gained into a corporate training position. I have always brought humor and enthusiam to any training or presentation that I have done. Can you give me any suggestions on how I can make the switch? |

The best method I have found is to make them a part of the process. Hands on training that relates to their specific roles with plenty of examples that they can relate too. Also, keep plenty of chocolate handy..pass out the candy when they become overwhelmed to help get those endorphins flowing! Try to get the other trainers who are resistant to your new approach to be a part of the project. Those who complain the loudest are the very ones that you can use to sell the training. Respect those who have been around for awhile..they may be resistant to change (everything is safe in our circle) but you must be able to show them the plus side in order to get them out of their comfort zone and on board with your new take on training. I know this sounds impossible but it can be done. Survey's are a wonderful tool for proving that the training is working. Take a survey at the end of each training section..then a few months later have these same individuals retake the survey and be sure to include "did the training you received help you with your job" also make sure to have a write in section for areas that would be helpful to be taught more in your class. Criticism is hard sometimes to accept but take it and make it work for you. |
