I would list the top 3 traits for a Creative Services as follows:
STRONG ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
You will no doubt be managing more than one project at a time. Therefore, you will need to be able to manage time lines, work flow, and resources efficiently. And because you will undoubtedly be hit with an unexpected project, you have to be able to quickly re-prioritize assignments on the fly. As a Creative Services Director, Excel spreadsheets will become your best friend.
INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS
It's one thing to be able to set a deadline, but it is quite another to understand set a deadline that is reasonable. A good Creative Services Director should have a strong understanding of the time required to move a project from concept to completion. Also, key to the creative process is a having a process to begin with. That would include creative briefs or strategy statements that are clearly written, pre-approved by key stakeholders and reviewed with the creative team before any work begins. This is the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that the team clearly understands the project before them.
ABILITY TO INSPIRE AND MENTOR A CREATIVE TEAM
A good Creative Services Director knows what it takes to get the best work out of their creative team. I've never met a single creative person yet who enjoyed being treated like a drone. The key to keeping a staff motivated, I believe, is to make sure the creative person still feels ownership in the creative project. You don't achieve that by telling them HOW to do things - you achieve it by providing clear, strategic direction and empowering them to use their creative skill set to arrive at the best solution. The creative ego is a fragile thing; a few "atta boys" go a long way to keeping people happy.
