What is the best training for becoming a credit & collections manager? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective credit & collections manager?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

Some would say education, but I would strongly disagree. Experience in Credit & Collections is the ticket, years of dealing with the situations that arise in the position. A college degree can get you in the door, but without experience a degree is worthless

I strongly agree. NACM Certifications are helpful. But stay away from hack imitations like the PACM. Run by a guy named Harold in Western PA the guy is a fraud!!

It helps to have experience in Accounting. Experience is the only training. Going to credit and collection seminars are helpful as it gives you ideas on how to handle situations. However, every situation and conversation is different. I have been a Credit and Collections Manager for over 25 years and everyday I come across different situations. You have to think fast, know how to deal with
people and most important be able to have a comeback for everything. Being very pleasant, persistant and patient is the key to success.

I agree with Pam... being a collections agent is not easy... to answer Karen... yes.. you can get entry-level training for collections.. I just completed some online training classes with the NACA at www.CollectionsAgent.org

I hope this helps.
