People skills are the most valuable because custodians require the assistance of people in succeeding in their profession. Training workers toward the goal of creating an exceptional workforce is key. Communication with the people who use facilities for their business operations enables custodians to perform their duties efficiently and effectively.

A custodian must be a student of his/her craft. Knowledge of techniques both manual and mechanical are essential. Respect for chemicals and machines and people is essential as well.

Engagement with the facility or facilities he/she is custodian of in such a way that ownership is felt toward them. "Custodian" is a legal term and should be taken as such by all people involved with facilities.
