Hi, I'm finishing up my pre-req's for the DH program in Fall '09. All my classes apply to Washington state, however I may consider Dallas, TX. I know the state of Texas have slightly different requirements. Could any one provide me a list of schools in Dallas to apply to? I'm researching but having a hard time pulling a list. Plus, I can't tell if these schools are good or not. Thanks!

Baylor College of Dentistry. Offers the Baccalaureate.
Collin County Community College. Offers Associates.
Tarrant County Community College. Offers Associates.
Texas Womens University. Offers the Baccalaureate.

Dentists here just want you licensed, very much in need of hygienists here.

I am taking pre-reqs right now as well. So ready to get started. Good Luck!!!

Depends on the school, but most require Introductory Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Microbiology. Check with the schools websites and they will give you further info.

Hi, Im tryin to decide between been a dentist or been a Dental Hygienist. My problem is that I'm 30yr old.
Based on my age I feel I should go for a DH. Can you guys help me with some information about the DH in dallas and why would you choose it over the dentist career?
Thank you very much for your time!

It is hard to get in. Very competitive!!! Each college takes about 14 to 18 students per semester and they have over 125 to apply every year. Keep you GPA above 3.70 and pass the HOBET or PSB depending on which test the school that you apply requires and you should have a shot at getting an interview.

Hi Everyone!! 'Just wondering, what does the PSB TEST cover? Is it similar to the HESI exam for nursing? I've decided to pursue a career as a DH instead of nursing and I have no idea what the PSB entails... HELP!!

Is it chemistry, math, english; maybe all of those or am I off base as to what the test will cover? Any information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated!! I am also a late bloomer at choosing a new career path! Good Luck with graduation and I hope to hear from you soon!! -KaseyP

Alright guys! I've just signed up for the PSB and they sent me a prep packet. It consists of:
Five tests and three sub tests:

Part one: Academic Aptitude

Verbal, Arithmetic, Nonverbal

Part two: Spelling

Part three: Reading Comprehension

Part four: Info in Natural Sciences ** This is the dangerous part, really hard stuff they expect you to know**

Part five: Vocational Adjustment

Also the Texas DH schools are
Tyler Community College
Tarrant County Community College
Collin County Community College
TWU
Baylor

Hope it Helps!

Also, Tyler requires the HOBET exam and they have a study guide (unlike the other tests) you can buy for 30$!

Good Luck

Hi,

Sanford Brown College is a privately owned college. It is very costly as opposed to a Dental Hygiene curriculum at a Community College. 35,000.00 vs. 14,000.00. The only thing that I find as a "negative" to obtaining a degree at this college is that the hours/prerequisites will NOT transfer to a Univeristy in the event that you want to expand your education and obtain a bachelors degree program. The college is accredited by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to issue an Associates of Applied Science degree however the Texas Department of Education for college course work cannot be recognized. Hope this helps you!

I have no personal information about the college but I do know one of the instructors at Sanford Brown college. She was the director at the dental hygiene curriculum at a community college where I obtained my AAS in Dental Hygiene. She speaks highly of the program however the costs associated with it are much higher than those of a community college curriculum.
Dental Hygiene is a very competative program and passing all of the required pre entrance tests, ie. PSB or HOBET is not an easy task. If you study long and hard then the payoff is worth the effort. Be prepared to have "NO LIFE" while attending any dental hygiene program. It is very intense but well worth the effort. Good Luck!
