How did you get your start doing deportation officer work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position? Do you need a particular educational background? |

Deportation officer jobs are usually given to those who have prior immigration experience such as Border Patrol, Office of Investigations, Detention and Removal Operations. There is currently no direct path to deportation officer. In order to apply you must be a current federal employee with past immigration experience. Most of the ranks are being filled with Border Patrol Agents, Special Agents from ICE and Immigration Enforcement Agents. |

Do you happen to know how the grade and step promotions work if I was to make the move from BP to ICE as a Deport Off. I just got my 9/1 and in a year I will be a 11/1. I know that BP moves up faster than most agencies. If I get hired on as a 9/1 with ICE as a D.O. will the advancement schedual stay the same. I have been warned that it might not and it could take years with ICE to get to the same place as i would be with just one more year with the Patrol. Thanks for any helpful comments. |

Basically we follow the rules like every federal agency. If you come on board as a 9/1 you get your 11/1 on your anniversary date and then 12/1 on your two year anniversary. Step increases are every year until your 3rd year and then it goes to every 2 or 3. |

Hi, my husband has 5 years in the military and was interested in either customs and border protection or ICE. Trouble is we don't know where to start to find a job. We have been on USA jobs and based on all the vacancies it doesn't seem he has the experience to fit the position. What is the most entry level position in these 2 agencies that he might have a shot at? Any help would be great!! |
