I know the struggle. Wish I can help with some great advice. Most IT help desk jobs in that area requires to already have a secret clearance. Very few ask that you can obtain one, and by that if that see you have a prior conviction, they don't want to spend money on running a security screening to get a clearance. But I suggest that you should try anyway. Apply for jobs that are direct hire thru a government agency. As long as you're not currently on parole or anyhting you will have a chance to get a clearance. Not a 100% or 90% chance, but your chance will be higher. The key is to do great on the interview and sell yourself. If they ask for an explanation of your prior conviction, give brief of it. In some interviews that question about your prior conviction might not be asked because of who maybe interviewing you. I had a couple of interviews where I wasn't asked because I was interviewed by someone that didn't work in the HR department.

If you make it to the screening for a clearance, just be completely honest about what ever questioned asked. That's the key to getting a government clearnace. From my understanding, you should be able to obtain a confidential or a secret, nothing higher than those.

I hope the little info helps. I've been about to get some employments for IT help desk positions, but some for little pay and it's tougher for me because I have to travel so far to either Richmond or Norfolk area. And they were short contract jobs. I relocated to NC to see if I can get something out here. I have up to a month to get employment. If not then I'll have to relocate back to VA.

Wish you the best of luck.

That sounds good, I can't past the part when I need to fill out the paperwork for a clearance and they see felon, it stops there. I got offered sever jobs but when I have to fill out the paperwork for the jobs that ask for clearance.........they say sorry, even if the job dont ask for a clearance.

Something have to give.

I feel you on that...something does have to give. I don't have a felony. My problem is bad credit. I career switched to i.t. 6 yrs ago and that's were the money problems started for me. But, before that 12 yrs of prefect credit.

Bad Credit is nothing, I don't understand what that has to do with you and I.T.

keep trying. i have a felony conviction from 10 years ago and have been rejected many times. as time passes it gets easier and becomes less of an issue. ive been hired by three big firms after disclosing my record. just dont apply at banks or in health/child care because they fall under strict regulations.
