Superior interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal). Also, the ability to LISTEN to your potential donors.

Can you suggest any tips or insights to develop your director of development expertise?

It's not sales. If you approach it with the ABC "always be closing" attitude, you're not going do well in the long run.

You need to be a donor centered kind of person - believe in the mission of the organization and I agree with with DD from Brooklyn, be listener, not a talker!

2. ability to communicate a cause.

3. engender trust.

4. highly organized.

5. ability to work with boards and volunteers including training.

6. ability to follow-up with people.

7. knowledge of professional philanthropy.

Simply...1)Product/Service Knowledge, 2) Offering a compelling reason to buy/give, 3) Relate to the buyers/donors emotion (greed, security, convenience, etc...) Thats it
