I agree with the previous poster, number one is to multi-task, if you can't do that, forget about it! Next is the ability to hear what is being said rather than just hearing "noise" and yes, thirdly, the desire to be on top of your game and be proficient at your job. There is a big difference between being a dispatcher and being a good dispatcher.

When very busy write things down and follow up accordingly. That helps with what the army dispatcher suggested.

I am an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. We primarily anwser 911 calls and dispatch ambulances. We "never" write down the calls we receive, we type them straight into the CAD as we receive the address from the RP. That way you are sure an ambulance will be dispatched to that location and not be forgotten on a piece of paper admist the chaos.

I agree that you need to be able to multi task in the field of dispatching. Know how to prioritize and be proficient. You have to know how to work with different personalities and have some Human Resource experience. This has helped me out a great deal! Knowing how to praise, correct and deal with conflict. Learn to take tasks in order of performance, being diplomatic and fair. Being able to communicate as clearly and as often as necessary.
