Getting a document specialist job.

How did you get your start doing document specialist work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

I got started in this field by taking temporary contract jobs. I made a point of taking every free software class each company I was temping for offered. If I heard someone complaining about MS Word, I'd go ask if I could help them. If I saw people putting documents together the cumbersome paper way-I'd offer to set them up with an electronic method. I basically just stuck my nose into everything that was interesting to me. Did lot's of volunteering for tedious tasks. That got me known as someone who could get things done.

I recommend taking a job in a document control department. You'll learn very quickly that people do things the hard way when it comes to document preparation and are just itching for someone to show them an easier way to do it.

My educational background didn't even come up in interviews. I sold them by telling them about process improvements, and asking them what their current challeges were and offering suggestions right there at the interview! Hope that helps!
