It is a tricky question that I might be unqualified to comment. I am a good videographer but a terrible economics and there are essays and grades to prove it. Yet, here I am and here we go:
1)A Strong knowlege in theory. A good economist needs to know where she/he stands and knows where other economists stand as soon as the other opens his/her mouth. If I am a classical economist and my adversary is a marxist, no amount of data is going to resolve that debate.
2)A command in mathematical jargon. It was my doom, do not make that same mistake. Take all the math courses you can.
3)Curiosity is also indispensable. What causes inflation? What causes poverty? and the ability to search for all the possible patterns that are natural in an economic system.
Those are actually four traits/abilities. I posted them because many students are either strong in theory or mathematics but not both. At the end their analysis is always flawed because they cannot understand one or the other. Curiosity because some tend to accept superficial responses as a given. Thus their assumptions are never unchallenge.

During my experience as an economist I have come up with the following most vital skills that every economist must have.
a) Analytical skills: Being an economist involves a lot of analysis of events and economic variables as such one must have excellent analytical skills so as to draw reasonable conclusions.
b) Interpretation of statistics: Numerical figures and statistics are an everyday thing for an economist and as such one must have the skill to understand and interpret statistics.
c)Forecasting skills: Economics is a historical, present and forward looking area and every economics must have the skills to provide accurate forecasts on economic variables. In fact an economist is gauged by their ability to provide accurate forecasts.
