I used to work for a startup company. From that experience, I've learned that the very first thing you will need are CUSTOMERS. Not the latest and greatest test equipment..not the fanciest office space...but CUSTOMERS. Research who your potential clients might be....and find ANY excuse to have them EXPERIENCE your new operation's quality, service, and value. EVEN if you make "absolutely nothing" on these jobs. The key is to make your NAME a HOUSEHOLD WORD around town. And have client decision-makers SEE how "cheap" your prices are....when compared to the mind-blowing product/services you provide. They will try you once...go back to their "usual" vendor...and your company will start to make that "usual vendor" look "like a ripoff". At this point, you will begin to build a customer base. The second advice I have is to BE INVOLVED WITH YOUR COMMUNITY. Support your local school system...be in the local community events. But NEVER NEVER NEVER advertise ANY product or service. Simply state that "this event is supported in part by ...Xyz, Inc. More information can be found at www.xyz.com". And have all the selling stuff on that website. Remember, all the people who bring their families to these events also work at your clients companies. Position yourself as the "big generous competitor" compared with the "greedy !@#$%" that they currently deal with. People like that. All that I learned while working for a startup.... Hope that helps. -Curtis |
