What are typical emergency medical technician salaries? Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

By using the Indeed Salary Search you can get an estimated average salary for EMT: www.indeed.com/salary?q1=EMT&l1=&tm=1

This shows the average salary for an EMT to be around $30K

Until recently (I moved to NC) I was an EMT-B in Central NJ. I worked for MONOC, NJ's largest EMS provider, and their starting hourly rate is $10.63 plus $0.50 for NREMT Certification (although not required in NJ and NOT a higher level certification). MONOC, based in Wall Township on RT 34, also gave me a token bonus for my 14 years experience so I started at $12.63/hr. They do have medical insurance; covering my family cost me $200/mo. Single would cost around $100. By the way, when I let my NREMT cert lapse, since it is NOT required and is NOT a higher cert, MONOC cut the extra $0.50/hr. How petty.

A company also in Central NJ that mostly has only per-diem EMT's and NO medical insurance pays approx. $14/hr. You have to shop around and talk to people.

So there you have it. NJ EMT-B.

Almost forgot. NJ EMS pay is typically lower than other emergency services mainly due to the fact that in NJ, Fire and Police are mandated by law in every municipality whereas EMS is not. However once a municipality takes on the responsibility to provide EMS, such as contracting with a neighboring town or private company, they are from then on obligated to do just that.
