Difference between medical esthetician and others

I'm planning on going to school for estetics after i'm done with cosmetology school in Alaksa. My question is whats the difference between medical esthetician and the other types, and also is there specific schools to go to to become a medical esthetician rather than work in a spa and that sort of thing? One more thing about how much does an esthitician make?Thanks!!

I am currently a Esthetics student and they are teaching us everything they can as kind of a wide spectrum program. So you can branch off and you can take courses on the side for about $500 and less that are specialist courses. At least that's how it is at this school. Like I'm taking the Microdermabrasion course and the a couple others. And I want to be a medical Esthtetician with a specialty in acne.

A medical esthetician is a separate course taken after you have become an esthetican. You are trained in medical strength superficial peels like Jessner, some include microderm training, some laser training, manual lymph drainage, pre/post op facials etc, "acne surgery," and cosmetic laser procedures. If you are wanting to be in a docs office, you may want to check out some extra laser training. I see you are from AZ. Check out "National Laser Institute." Hopefully that is helpful. I have some friends that have been estheticians for over 10 years. They are making six figures. It is not unheard of! Good luck to you!

Unfortunately, the number of plastic surgeons is much less than the number of aestheticians that are being graduated. It is very difficult to get an office to hire someeone recently graduated. I think it is quite unfair that these schools are telling students that it is so easy to break into this market. As a manager for these physicians one needs to appreciate the fact that we are swamped with resumes for positions.

The only school I know of that you can go to and become a "certified medical est.", as apposed to just an ets. is Burlington County Technical Institute.

I am currently researching what it takes to become a licensed esthetician working in a med spa. Is there anyone out there who can give me tips on what school(s) are best and what the current market is out there for girls just starting out? I also am extremely motivated to open my own location any tips?

I am an esthetician in AZ and I went to Kar-Che for school. I had a girl in my class from San Diego who stayed here for 4 months to complete school at Kar-Che because she was told from many professionals in Cali that its the best school to go to. So, she did. Let me tell you it was so hard and accelarated but I would do it again. I feel so well trained. If you stay in Cali for school, my advice is call some spas and ask what schools they hire from. I did that. The market is hard and has been for a while. But if you are truely motivated you will find your place. Im poor right now trying to build up a clientele but its worth it because I absolutey love it! I recommend working somewhere first for at least 6 mos to see how things operate then move on to working for yourself and renting a space. You can do it!

Unless there have been recent changes, no state has a "medical" esthetician license. Utah and Virginia have 2-tier licenses - 600 hours for esthetician and 1200 hours for Master esthetician. California is considering adding the Master license. But, no medical esthetic license is currently available.

Generally a "medical Esthetician" is usually considered a nurse/esthetician. However you can become a laser certified esthetician in some states and work on the medical side of things under a Dr.s supervision. That is what Im doing in AZ.

Regarding the comment about the field being swamped. I would think that would really be based on area and what state you are in? For example here in NJ, there is only one school in the are that you can get a ertified as a "medical" esthesitian. Alot of the schools basicall have a cosmetology program and throw in learning some facials. So I know of doctors here (I am originally a medical transcriptionist), who are in need of "trained" people.

If you can make it to the Dallas show in Arlington TX April 13 & 14th I would suggest going and Conference and talking to others who are in the business.

Just going to school can be a $8,000 investment and that is just for school to get your license and doesn't even start to cover advanced education.

I am looking to go to school for esthetics..but I really want to learn absolutly everything about it..spa esthetics..medical esthetics ect.. I live in the awful state of New Hampshire and ive been reasurching schools in NH and MA. Can anyone give me some info on a really good school in NH or MA where I could learn everything about esthetics!Im currently interested in The institute of esthetics in concord NH. help :-)

If you want to learn everything you have an impossible task. Cut your expectations down a little.

There will be three steps involved:

Optain your state license.

Each state is different but they all require you to attain training in the state you are going to practice in or already have a license in another state that they will accept.

That's the begining.

Seek Advanced education

Then plan for advanced education. Some choose to get a CIDESCO Diploma, Some ITEC, some study and train in specific areas.

Seek Continued Education.

To learn everything will require a never ending education. You will never stop. Trust me on this. Over 64 years in this industry, I still learn.

I recommend getting a CIDESCO license, it covers everything the advance course does for less money in the school at Independence, MO. Look up what it means to have a CIDESCO diplomat, you'll be impressed.

There is no such thing as a CIDESCO License. Only your State can issue you a license. I really wish people would stop implying that CIDESCO will get you a license.

To work in a State after Cidesco you to its full potential you have to have:

A full Cosmetology License
plus a massage therapy license.

or

Esthetician's license
plus a nail tech license
plus a massage therapy license.

If both require the same hours there's a good chance that you can optain a license in one of the States and then Optain a license in the other through reseprosity.

Yes, Jeff is correct. CIDESCO is not a license. I worded it incorrectly in my earlier post. However, I'm advising you to get your education from a CIDESCO school.

A Cidesco Diplomat status is a certificate gained for aestheticians seeking a standard of testing in various areas of facial and body aesthetics. I have physicians seeking aestheticians with a broad background in aesthetics/nursing/instuctor background . I cannot find aestheticians job placements with just an aesthetic license. I am a nurse-aesthetician-instructor and still I had to prove myself every step of the way.
We find more nurses moving this direction because it is the future. So, send some of those applications from aestheticians to me and I will find them a job/ and challenge their background. You still would need more than Cidesco certification to remain competive and to gain opportunity in this growing field of Medical Aesthetics.

It is not a waste of your time to become an aesthetician. It is important for you to have a plan that maps out what you want to achieve 5-10-15 years down the road. A Aesthetics License provides you with the basic formula of skin care . It lays the foundation for your understanding how to care for the skin during varying stages of life. It is your postgraduate education that is profoundly important for you to achieve. Never let someone discourage your ideas.
Find out about the Aestheticians International Association exam as well. This is just to encourage anyone seeking more possibilities for advancing their present license. And, finally remmber there are opportunities available with so many medical specialists. Plastic Surgery is just one stop.

hello everyone! My name is Trishna and I am a licensed aesthetician here in the state of NV. I'm 25 yrs. old. I'm also a licensed manicurist. I currently do nails for living and I just do simple wax and facial at a salon that I worked for. I want to go back to school to pursue my dream of becoming a medical esthetician. I wanted to ask for your help because I don't know where to start or what to do. I just moved to Las Vegas and I'm not familiar with the surrounding. I've had the pleasure of working with Tino and we became friends. He is a definite pro and absolutely knows his stuff. For clinical estheticians and paramedical estheticians or nurse practioners doing skin care, his education is invaluable. He's not for the newbies, I'll be honest. Not everyone that presents teaching programs in aesthetics/ medical aesthetics are actually licensed instructors. By that I mean some individuals are representatives of a product or equipment line.I aslo mean that you should make sure of the qualifications of someone teaching or presenting a medical aesthetics program.

MedSpa are closing down there businesses all over town. I've just moved here from Maine and I'm not familiar with the city of Las Vegas to get around yet.
As a Vietnamese 25 yrs. old girl, i'm afraid they would need a person with more experiences background. Otherwise, who wouldn't want to "earn while you learn" u know? Although I have obtained my license as an aesthetician for roughly 3 years now, but I've been working for salon where ONLY the owner wants to do facial themselves. I only do waxing when the owner is not present. That's why my experiences in the facial field is minimal. I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn to do more of an advanced facial and go into medical esthetic. I'm so confused on what step to take 'cause I wanted to do more than just having a license.

I understand what you meant, but wouldn't the professor be offended if I ask whether he or she is actually an instructor who knows what he or she us teaching? And how would u know if they are actually the right person? Would they need to be a CIDESCO diplomat? I really don't want to waste the time and effort and not to mention the money on something that I cannot get what I need: knowledge and experience. I wanted to be able to perform a hands-on training too.

I went to the Euphoria site but could find nothing relating to advanced esthetics. I did find a few of the Lincoln Schools that offered nursing courses but I found nothing that related to "Medical Esthetics".
