Licensed Cometologist but wants to become a esthetician

Hi!If anyone can help me out on a little information!I have been licensed as a cosmetologist for 3yrs,but now im looking into esthetician...Do i have to go to school all over again or is there a training program!! And i noticed the Asthetician also that sounds really neat being that i wanted to do something in medical! So if anyone can help thats awesome

Hello Jessica we are in the same boat. I've been working as a Licenced cosmetologist for about 3yrs and now looking into skin care. As a cosmetologist I think we can also work as Estheticians since we had training in this area in our cosmetology courses. We might just need some advance training in this area which can be pricy. I also obtained a Vocational Nursing License so it will be easier for me to work in a dermatology office or with a doctor. However, I've been having difficulty looking for a job because I have never worked as an Esthetician. I've heard that most of these dermatology offices and medical spas will train on the job but its hard to find them. Anyone else have any suggestions for us???

I was in the same boat as you both, and made a big mistake to go to a very prestigious Esthetics school in Manhattan and took the full course. Upon completion, I found out that wasn't necessary! Look into a basic skin care starter class where you can learn the technique of the facial and all of the machinery. The cost in NY is about $600 for a basic skin care course, where as going for full training in NY cost me about $8,000. Be very specific when looking into schools, because they will try to have you sign up for the full course rather than just a brush up starter course for people who already have a license! You should look into taking the International Dermal Institutes "International Skin Care Techniques" course. It is a five-day course that will be a great beginning point. Very reasonably priced as I recall. These are the Dermalogica people.

With a full cosmetology license you can perform esthetics. You do not need a different or another license. You may, however, need some additional post graduate training (especially if it has been some time since you went to school).

I've not done much with my license in the past 7 years, but always kept it up. I was never very good at hair, but always much more comfortable with skin care. In the past year I've been using and testing a technology and support products that's better than anything I've ever used and am seriously considering getting the additional post graduate traing in esthetics to start working with it in skin care

If I were you, this is what I would do:

Get the latest edition of the standard textbook used by schools in esthetics. Study it at home. Also, get basic esthetics facial techniques on video. There are a number of good ones available. Also one on waxing. WaxQueen has a good one.

Now practice of friends, family, whomever.

This will get you up-to-speed.

Also, take advantage of the inexpensive courses offered by your community colleges. Take basic chemistry, phychology and business. These are really needed to help you be able to understand and make your way through all the "puffery" which is used in the business.

Then start looking for "post graduate courses". Do the above first you you will most likely waste a lot of money on "Post Graduate" courses.

Did you know that typing in all caps is yelling?

It depends on what state you're in. Utah was the first state to require 1200 hours for a master esthetician training. But here, as a cosmetologist, you are required to take courses in esthetics
in order to get your license. All schools in Utah have an intermediate program where you can join a class who have just finished their basics training and are entering the master program. It's half the cost of my full 1200 education but a lot of the girls entering my advanced class were very far behind as most cosmetology schools don't go very deep into the science of skin.

I would just like to have the opportunity to start practicing what I have spent the last 6 months learning in esthetics class. I can't seem to find any openings in the Dallas market. Anyone have any ideas about how to get foot in the door? I've sent resumes, walked in and asked for managers, made phone calls, responded to craigslist, salonjobs, etc.

If you want to practice skin care i am in fl btw but you can take classes with a reputable company like dermalogica is an extensive skin care company and they offer certificates....also you can take a class to be cerified doing microdermabration...there all kind of things you can do without having to go to school again agh

i just graduated from von lee of aesthetics and no you technically dont need to go back to school because its already included in the cosmo program but i would highly recommend that you do go to school for it because a classmate of mine had just went to school for cosmo as well and said it didnt cover anything we had learned at von lee

I am also considering going into Skin care and was thinking about going to FCCJ for their skin care program its about 1000 dollars and I'm already a lis.Cosmo. but figured taking a skin care course would be a good refresher.. They only thing is that the course doesnt teach microderma. or chemical peels which is what im really interested in.. Does anyone have any advice on where to learn that or do you think if I started working in a spa or doctors office they would teach that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey...I just finished my esthetician training at The Milan Institute in San Antonio. I would really recommend the program. I found a list of schools in my area at www.topbeautyschools.org/. Try looking there for more specific information on esthetician programs because I believe it varies state by state.
