The problem is, the professional exercise physiologists never professionalized their field like other professions, such as, physical therapists and dietitians. If exercise physiologists ever professionalized their profession and established billing rights through medical insurance companies for their services, the profession would take off. There is a huge need for proper exercise testing and prescription by those trained to do so. At this time it is cheaper to get one with general knowledge in this area, such as, nurses, etc. Exercise physiologist have just simply been too passive in getting the profession recognized by the whole medical profession. Exercise physiologists are waiting for the medical profession to accept them as professionals. The reality is, they use their expertise and pay them peanuts for their services. Why should they change this. Exercise physiologists need to change it and demand more.

Sorry, but in response to your specific question, getting certified through the American College of Sports Medicine is the first place to start. Most professional organizations recognize these certifications for competency verification. You can find all the information on-line.

There is an American Society of Exercise Physiologists, ASEP also offers a certification for EP's.

What is the point of ACSM (very expensive to obtain initally)when all the jobs are going to be given to general people and they still pay peanuts with or without ACSM.
