I am a CFP/ChFC with severl years in the Financial Services industry and I am finally seriously considering going independent and starting my own RIA or affiliating with LPL or Raymond James and using their RIA.

Obviously my biggest concerns are providing for my family as I transition from Salary + Bonus compensation structure to strictly commission/fee-based structure. How tough will it be to do this? I'm pretty sure I can bring about 3-4 million with me within the first year or two.

Any advice would be greatly appreicated.

I would suggest you visit www.advisorheads.com. Just about everything you want to know about LPL, Rayjay, forming your own RIA, etc is available there. There are long tenured posters affiliated with both B/Ds and several stand alone RIA outfits that are regular contributors.
