I am thinking about taking an online program for a financial planning certificate, with the intent to take the CFP exam. I currently have a Bachelor's Degree in Business, but am currently unemployed. I have also never worked in the finance industry, would a certificate get me in the door or is a degree preferred by employers.

I took the CFP course and qualified to sit for the exam 2 years ago while working as a manufacturers rep. I was laid off in Dec so decided to try to change careers and study for the CFP exam. I took the exam in July and passed it on the first try. I have had one job opportunity since then, working for Mass Mutual and their general agent in Florida. It is like all the other life insurance/financial services representative positions. It was not really what I was looking to do. The only other job offer I have had is for a bank teller position. Not what I expected when a spent thousands of dollars and alot of time studying and passing an exam only 50% of the people that take it. It is also worth nothing if you don't have or can't get 3 years experience in any of the 6 disciplines within 5 years.
