What should my first step be to career change into financial services?

I am actively seeking a career change into the Financial Services industry, preferably in the capacity of a financial or investment advisor.

A bit about me:

I have an honors bachelor's degree in recreation and tourism management (not a business degree, but some business focus). I have been working in the hospitality industry for the past 10 years and have 4 years of operational management experience within world-class resorts. Prior to hotels, I was a Sales and Marketing Manager for a large nightclub and concert hall and have a lot of serving and bar experience. Those who know me best would describe me as a true "people-person" and a natural salesman ... You might say, I have the "Gift of the Gab".

I have sent my resume to a few banks and brokerage firms, but haven't heard anything. I'm pretty confident that I'll hit the nail on the head once I get a face to face interview, but since I do not have direct experience in financial services, I am worried they aren't getting past my cover letter.

I'm thinking about taking the Canadian Securities Course (Canadian equivalent to the US Series 7 exam) to add some relevant training to my resume. Would it be worthwhile for me to take the exam, or am I wasting my $$ because I don't have the right foundation to begin with? Is there anything else I should look into instead of, or in addition to the CSC? I’d rather not start in an entry level position such as a bank teller or something similar. I assume that my years of management and customer service experience must be worth something in the realm of transferable skills.

Your advice is appreciated!
