Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

What skills should you learn to increase your salary?

A lot of people forget that you need this monster called experience, try gunning for internship first and not a job. I started like you but went for a year's internship. Now I am a senior GIS technician at the university after practising as a GIS Assistant consultant for 5 years.

Increasing your salary in GIS depends on your personal growth, you can increase your IT skills in order to integrate them with your GIS. This will make you stronger on the technical aspect of GIS & thus end up getting top jobs such as GIS programming, small world development, etc. If not you have to grow on management level, meaning taking project management & start working on plannings of projects, mobilizing them, etc. Personal growth is important for you to deepen your pocket in GIS.

I am a GIS Technician in Pretoria and have a BSc Honours in Geography. I am also studying towards a certificate (Datamatrics in Computer Science). In essence I guess one needs to understand that being a Specialist takes more efforts than we would think.

Think here: how long does it take for CAs to reach their dream? and How much they get to their pocket for articles?. similarly being a Specialist you need to undergo a particular process specifically today in South Africa you also need to register yourself with the Council (GISSA.

Salary wise: It is quite difficult to scale entry level salaries due to different sectors and race. At my workplace someone with just a matric certificate and two years experience earns R6000 more than my salary. Bear in mind that I have honours degree and two years experience as well. It depends really on how best you know who works there and same goes to tenders.

Don't you just hate it when people uses their influence to earn better salaries than you? It's worse in the private sector and it's not motivating at all!

Hi
I have Social Science degree from a good reputable university in Gauteng, South Africa. The thing is that I am currently working for government in a different field not to do with GIS. I would like to know whether it is possible to get an entry level post with no experience. I once thought of sacrificing by leaving my current job and look for internship, but the challenge I am not sure if I can financially survive if I do internship. I have more about five years in my current job and very passionate about GIS hence looking forward to migrate towards GIS environment.
