Do private firms shy away from hiring people from the public jobs?

I would hope not. Private jobs do pay more than public jobs. Some people say public jobs (ie government jobs) are slower pace. It just depends on the type of work the private company does versus the public company.

This is an old thread but here you go. Private companies do tend to pay more, have poor benefits and losing your job is far easier as money being brought in is the bottom line. Public has lower pay, better benefits and more stability. My example:
City-
Pay after 5 years $50k
Vacation-3 weeks year
sick-12 hours month
retirement-6% match

Engineering company I applied to:
Pay-$48-60k
vacation/sick-2 weeks year
retirement-company stock

Depends on what works for you.
