Do some companies pay a lot more for this position than others? What does a top earner make in this field?

Yes some pay more but most will start you at $10-$15 ($15 being great) This is an entry level position that is in VERY high demand amongst bright eyed gamers everywhere. Unless you live somewhere that has a good game development industry your chances are slim. Who you know is key.
Skills to increase salary? Experience is the only thing that will help you there:)Put together a good computer oriented resume and don't go on about all the games you kick ass at (shows a potential for distraction) and start pounding on doors!
