What is the best training for becoming a hirable graphic artist? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective graphic artist?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

Any certification from Adobe would be a big big asset.
Especially Illustrator and Photoshop.
Many great training tools exist for these programs.
Many technical schools offer courses in these programs.
Adobe also has the Classroom in a Book series, you might find them at the library
or a used book store. It might not be real world production stuff but you will know the program. Many companies also test people before hiring.

Good Luck.
