I would like to know what jobs are out there for people who do printmaking, like block prints, for example. I live in San Francisco. |

Here are a few jobs that my students have found after their graduation. One had found a job as shop assistants at an artist/collaborative press, where artists confer with a master printer to have their work translated into the print medium. Do a search for collaborative press and you get lots of links. You can also try museums that hire art movers or installers. They are more likely to hire someone with art degrees, who have demonstrated a commitment to the field. When I finished my BFA, I found a job working as a museum store manager. After my MFA, I was offered a position as a traveling museum curator in charge of driving the van that did tours with a collection of American Indian art. If you have the MFA, you will increase your options for professor positions if you cultivate another area of expertise, like graphic design. Many universities today need to fill several areas with one search. I was hired to fill both drawing and printmaking. Also, if you have some down time in your search activities, don't be afraid to accept part-time instructor jobs or do printmaking residencies. A residency in Europe will increase your competitive edge considerably. Don't forget to keep working on building your show vitae. You can see from all this that there aren't too many options, specifically for printmakers. If you are a self starter, you can do prints of different universities you know. The alumni and PR departments on campus might buy up your prints to give to their large donors. It's just a thought. Good luck out there! - Prof. Ralph Slatton, art/printmaking |
